Kenya: Bush Meat Could Cause Death, Says KWS Official

The Nation (Nairobi)
7 October 2007
George Munene
Nairobi

People living next to forests and game reserves were yesterday told no to eat bush meat.

Conservationist Winnie Kiiru warned that the meat could be infected with deadly diseases such as anthrax.

"Bush meat which is not inspected could cause death and people should not eat it," she said.

People hunt for rabbits, antelopes and other animals and hurriedly use the meat for food, endangering their lives, she added. (NE comment -> )

Conservation

Addressing a meeting at Ndiriti village of Kirinyaga district to stress the importance of wildlife conservation, she said it was illegal to interefere with wildlife in any way.

The meeting, sponsored by the Kenya Wildlife Service and NGO Born Free, was the initiative of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology lecturer Marion Mutugi.

Ms Kiiri, also a KWS consultant, said wildlife is a major foreign exchange earner and should be protected.

One thing is for sure. Starvation certainly causes death.

The bushmeat trade is eradicating Kenyan wildlife, which has declined about 70% since the hunting ban of 1977. Traditionally, few Kenyan tribes ate wild game, but with the ban, which took effective anti-poaching forces run by PH's out of the bush, and the near-total lack of wildlife law enforcement, millions of animals have been strangled in snares, to be sold as unidentified 'meat', even in big cities. Huge regions which once teemed with wildlife now support nothing larger than ground squirrels; it has all been eaten. One of the bunny-huggingest organizations did a survey of Nairobi butcheries a few years ago, and found that over 30% of all meat being sold was game. None of this seems to worry the animal rights groups which control wildlife policy here, however; so long as no one shoots anything, they consider Kenya a conservation success.

Right on LGF.

Same issues plague West Africa.

Funny {?} thing is, the warning may indeed be valid. Anyone who has seen "meat" of unknown age, handling and preparation sitting in a booth in the hot tropical sun must wonder how many people flat out die from eating it. I know I always did!!

Another trend, which I find humorous to the point of ridiculous, is that in Zimbabwe and other southern african countries bush meat is seen as a staus symbol amoungst the ministers and those who have been the recipient of gov't "largess." Serving bush meat at social gatherings apparently indicates that the city slicker is in tune with the bush and in touch with the rural people.

Kinda like wearing kinte cloth here I guess, which is equally stupid.

Bush meat is called "red gold" in the parlance, indicating the blackmarket support for comercial poaching.

Since Obama is so enamored with Africa, I wonder if we will be seeing seething, steaming, heaping, weeping, crawling, reaking piles of Bush Meat being served at his inaugural banquet should that eventuality occur?

Misahala iko wapi???

When travelling from Nairobi to Harare we bought the raisin encrusted meat sold at local African town markets from time to time.

HIV/Aids is also spread throug the bush meat industry. Primates carries the desease and it is spread to humans.

In fact no need to eat bush meat contaminated by Anthrax, just handle it(or a carcass) suffices to get the "black disease", anthrax.

AIDS transitioned to man from monkeys and chimps, but presumably through handling and eating them, rather than through ....ing them. When I was young and foolish I got elbows deep into an anthrax carcass and was about to eat the thing, were it not for an absurd coincidence involving a vet wandering through the bush who recognized it for anthrax. I thought the subcutaneous lesions were signs of a cheetah kill!
