Double rifle and shooting sticks.

How do you shot a double rifle from shooting sticks?
I mean without affecting regulation.

I've only done it a few times (and never in a hunting situation), but I have placed my hand in the crook of the sticks and never rested the gun itself on them. So far the bullets hit where I was aiming.

I suggest you learn to shoot your double as it was designed to be shot.....in your hands...try it , it really does work!

Thanks for your answers.
I just try to find another way to check regulation, trying not to use a bench.
I shoot from the bench resting my forward hand on sacks but I suspect that is why my barrels cross.

1st i usually use the top part of the sticks (the bottom part is for prone) I usually rest the forend on the sticks and grad hold of the forend and 1 stick at the same time

Give us some more information. What rifle/cartridge are you using??? If you have barrels cross firing it is hardley likely to be the problem of your benchrest. There are a number of causes here.
My advice is to throw your shooting sticks away and check your regulation off a proper benchrest with the rifle resting naturally between your hands, If recoil is an issue for you then try the new " lead sledge" ( I think that is the right name), and this will help you enormously. You connot, and will not sucessfully test the regualtion of your double using shooting sticks.

They are mostly used by African PHs to offer clients a more steady rest when shooting at game. Personally , when hunting, or at any other time, I dont use them preferring to hold the rifle naturally myself. Many experienced hunters, however do think they are a very good idea. Dont use them to " REGULATE" your double though

Give us some more detail and we will see if we can find a sloution for your double "crossing".

I’m trying to find a load that regulate on my Kodiak muzzleloader .58”
I know that the Kodiak it is not truly regulated, just have “some convergence”.

I shoot it only once (12 round balls and 7 REALs) from the bench. I put some sandbags over the bench and shot (on my knees) trying to keep my back straight up. Take the rifle and rest only my forward hand on the sandbags
With round balls (300gn) barrels are crossing about 2.5” at 25 meters.
With R.E.AL. bullets (440 gn) barrels are crossing about 4” at 50 meters.
Use only one owder charge, 82gn of FFFg black powder (the only I can get here).
I have to make more shooting to confirm this but I have been thinking that resting my hand too much on sandbags and or leaning forward can cause part of this crossing. That’s why I consider using sticks.

Martin both loads are too fast if they are crossing, and I'd bet they are printing low as well! Try backing off 2.0 grs,or use a heavier bullet, and the way you are holding the rifle is fine,unless you are placeing a sand bag under the butt of the rifle, then it is not fine. Though it would be better if you could stand on your feet! If you go to the sticks, place a sand bag or something soft on top that will allow you to hold the fore-end as if shooting off hand. Yor right elbow needs a rest as well, but the rifle should touch nothing but your hands,shoulder, and face!

Thanks for all the advises.
I shoot again yesterday.
Rise the charge (using REAL 440gn) from 80 to 100 gn (vol) but loose accuracy so I tried 90 gn (vol.)

From the bench I can not get consistent groups. I use a collapsible working bench and sit low so my back is vertical.
Eight shots forming two good groups:
Group A: R1, L1, R3, L3 into 3”, almost round but low (3”) and to the right (2”) of the aiming point.
Group B: R2, L2, R4, L4, into 5.5” left on left side and right on right side but high ( 3”) to the left (2”) of aiming point.
I think that this two groups are because the way I hold the rifle over the bench but I can also have problems with the loading system (muzzleloading rifle).
Then I shoot standing resting my front arm on my truck and get a bigger group 5 ¼”, low (1.5”) and 5” to the right of aiming point.

As I’m alone when shooting I shoot to two targets side by side, right barrel to the target on the right and left to the other. Then I copy one target over the other to get composite group.
