Think .50 calibre muzzle loader with 120 grains of powder and you can get some ideas. A .500 BPE is on my wish list. I'd love to have a sweet .577 BPE, but they are rarer that pixie dust. Champlins has a steel Holland .500BPE that I'm giving serious though to.

empirevr:
Here's a previous thread on the first hunt with my Rodda .577/.500 No.2 some time back.

I intend to give that little sidelock a bit more work soon, but I just haven't had the time I need to tidy it up a bit first. No worries with the loads, though.

Bonanza,Marrakai, thankyou both.

I managed to find myself a damn gun, beauty, but it is 500 bpe not 577......much of a muchness isnt it really?

Anyway, now i wonder about well, everything about it.....luckily this caliber is affordable loaded, even more so if you home load, but I wonder what its like to use.....

I read that 577/500 story, but wasnt sure if the two have the same ballistics.

By the by mine is oval bore/invisible rifling.....i await the howls of horror!

Ben

My first double was a Grant in .500 3" BPE, back in the bad old days before we could get Swiss black powder. I had a heck of a time getting it to regulate with Goex, even duplexed, but eventually got it to the 'useful' level. Now that there are several suppliers of decent 350 grain cast bullets and Swiss #4 (1-1/2 Fg) black it's a much easier proposition. Recoil was quite tolerable, but it was stocked a bit too high form me and it bashed my face unmercifully so I passed it on to someone else.

The first thing you need is a copy of Greame Wright's book "Shooting the British Double Rifle" which has oodles of lore and loading data on making these old rifles tick.

My current favorite double is an 1879-vintage Lancaster in .450 3-1/4" with oval boring like yours. Oval bores are great with black - no corners to hide fouling in! I took this rifle to Africa in '99 loaded with a hatful of Swiss and home swaged 365 grain paper-patched bullets. I love it for non-dangerous game.

Hello Steve

Thankyou for the info sir, much appreciated.

-my heart sinks every time i hear about that book, very simply, and sadly,i had it, when it came out first, as a present, think it was about £12 or £15 or such, i found out, and well......i lost it in a fire.

My episode was the one with photos of W.W. Greener's premises in.

Many thanks, will get another copy as i see i must.

Ben
