A Day in Chewore, in pictures and words
      #86359 - 29/09/07 09:35 AM

The following sequence comes from Ray Vandever's recent big game hunt in Chewore. I hope you enjoy it

A cloud-delayed Chewore dawn creates illusionary effect

Wild-dog at dawn

[URL= ][IMG]

A herd of buffalo bunches up on the fringe of the Chenje airfield

[URL= ][IMG]

An elusive grysbok (chiteke) is glimpsed momentarly, before it darts away into entangled jesse flanking the Maura River

[URL= ][IMG]

More seldom seen antelope. This time roan, towards the top end of the Maura

[URL= ][IMG]

What we always believed to be our most promising bait is hit by a large tom, and all angles are covered in preparation for a pre-dawn walk-in the following morning....

[URL= ][IMG]

Back down the Maura. Midway along that scenic river's course, we come across this small group of buffalo. Note the super bull and the one horned old cow.

[URL= ][IMG]

Elephants flee our intrusion, although one cow is not so sure she should be fleeing

[URL= ][IMG]

Shortly after the trackers and gamescouts chased and failed to apprehend several poachers whom we suprised at a spring. A couple of shots were fired and spears recovered. In this picture are two Parks gamescouts, Ray Vandever and tracker Oriah. They look like they are about to start a revolution, African style!

Siesta time

Ever on the death watch.

If the Skoal tobacco company would like to use PH Richard Tabor in an advertisement, they should be advised that I am the man to speak with

[URL= ][IMG]

Jason Bromley, our eager young apprentice, is saving up to buy an ammo belt

[URL= ][IMG]

An afternoon walk down a wending tributary of the Maura brings about this encounter with a startled female klipspriger

[URL= ][IMG]

More buffalo are spotted on a rocky ridge, as we make our way back towards Mana-Angwa in the late afternoon. That jongos bull will be an excellent trophy for a hunter one day. Or a satisfying feed for a pride of hungry lions!

[URL= ][IMG]

This sandgrouse chick almost became a road kill. That would have been unlucky, as the traffic is not too heavy in Chewore

Never too tired to share good humor with good friends. From the left: senior PH and elephant hunting legend, Magara Dirapenga, PH Richard Tabor, the journalist and PH Peter Wood

Great photos.

Isn't "skoal" also a toast like "cheers"?
