How do you use your SS rifles?

Greetings,

I have a friend who collects single shot rifles, primarily old western U.S. models. He loves the looks of the SS rifle but when it comes hunting season, he grabs a bolt and off he goes.

I've also got numerous friends who own beautiful SS rimfire rifles but very seldom take them into the field after rabbits and the like. They always take a bolt or an autoloader (I hate the term 'semi-auto).

No judgement of right or wrong here, just an interesting observation.

Sooo.... do you use your SS arms as hunting/shooting tools or are they more of a collecting thing for you?

I'm a terrible collector as I'd take the most gorgeous, rare SS rifle straight into the field and see how she performed.

Do you have any SS rifles that you simply refuse to risk in the field?

I've a Brno. May be the cheapest SS in the market, so I don't mind to break it and I use it every year with Ibex, Fallows, Roe Deers, Chamois, etc...
Guns must be used often unless they're old (or very expensive

)

I have used a Ruger No1 in 243 and one in 45-70 quite a bit hunting deer. My wife took a shine to the 243 and used it for whitetail, mule deer, antelope, and turkeys.
I recently got a Blaser K 95 in 308 that shoots very well. I plan to use it a lot in the future.

I use my singleshots a ton in the hunting fields. Matter of fact, unless I'm pretty sure I'm going to run into a big bear at close range in the thick stuff, a singleshot is what I carry.

well, I only have one SS, and it serves two distinct puposes.

1) My First Big Bore: a great piece to add to any collection, and a beautiful gun as well.

2) My First Big Bore: you've gotta learn to shoot the big-boys one way or the other, and the 375 is the way to do it. this allowed me to get into a big-bore for very little money and learn to shoot it well... eventually I'd like a 375H&H repeater, but that's a bunch of money down the road.

3) It goes BOOOOOM!!!!!

Man, you guys make wish I'd never sold my No.1's. I had a matched pair of No.1's in 375 and 458 back when they first came out. Back then, when they came out in the Tropicals, they had beautiful wood. After I had tweaked the toys with the mods and gotten the triggers down to 3# each and Magnaported both, I ended up with offers that I couldn't refuse. I do miss them. Waah.

Hey 475Guy,

We've all probably done that once or twice. I know I have.... and regretted it both times!

I kind of figured we had a lot of 'users' here and the responses certainly underscore that premise.

I've been talking with some friends and I'm organising a SS-only rabbit/varmint hunt for the last weekend of February which is the end of the rabbit season here.

Most of them have kids that shoot SS regularly and I expect that there may be more than one father taking a backseat to his youngster!

I'll be using my Winchester 1885 low wall equipped with a Columbia Precision tang sight and a Lyman globe up front.

Bunnies beware

Cry havoc and set loose the single shot riflemen

holmes, you got room for a free-loader??? what does a non-resident license cost anyway??? I'm headed to Summit County on the 29th, I could just take a detour!

My martini khornet is used every year for whitetail deer,and groundhogs.

I don't have a collector personality. I use my single shots (Ruger #1's and #3's)for hunting and when I get some fancy new ones custom made soon I expect to use them too. This might make some people cringe, but I have several knives made by Bob Loveless - and I use them too. Otherwise what are you supposed to do with this stuff?

Years ago, when I bought my first Loveless knife, it was a beautiful thing and worth the long wait - but I just stared at it and wondered what I would do with it. Then the phone rang, I placed the knife down and went answered it in another room. When I came back a few minutes later I looked at the knife and it looked a little different. Seems my dog had decided to just taste the sheath and handle, and left a few tooth marks. She did me a great favor - I knew exactly what I was going to do with it - enjoy using it for the purpose it was made for.

I really like your attitude! Especially, "What else am I supposed to do with the stuff?" I carried a Wayne Goddard elk tip folder for many years, until I decided I wanted a smaller pocket knife.
Fortunately I have friends who can afford really nice stuff. Today I shot a Perugini & Visini single shot .270, two Luciano Bosis O/U a 16 and a 28 ga. (either could have paid off my home mortgage) a T. Bland sidelock 12 ga. (circa 1920?) as well as my own M-12, 16 ga and my Cooper .22 bolt rifle. Also a Ruger #3 in .375-40 (blown out 30-40), a Bolinger custom .338, a M-95 Win. 30 US and a .243 Blazer break-open ss. All shot at clays, paper or steel targets from 50 to 200 yards. Off hand, bench, cross sticks.
A fun day with good friends!

Great post!

I think you've summed it up nicely for many of us less eloquent enthusiasts.

Got an old Randall #1 that I still carry and use regularly. Been with me for over three decades.

When I purchased a S&W 29 several years ago, it was unfired, NIB. Late '60s vintage. I promptly took t out and broke her in. Ended up being one of my sweetest shooters.

If I had a Rembrandt, I'd hang it in my bathroom
