Well, here's a larger image, unfortunately, hunt101 puts their banner right over the heads of two of the cartridges.

I think I see a 22LR and a 300H&H, but the rest I'm stumped on.

Let's see how long it takes our members to "guess" correctly.

I have a feeling once Ray or Mickey stumble onto the cartridges, it'll be all over with. But let's see just for grins and giggles.

Well, well, somebody is cheating! Dirty scandrals!! A hex, a hex! Just kidding, no hex's.

I figure if it's not right by the time I post below it, then it's not right afterwards.

I thought this would be fairly easy for you guys. Granted, if these were not my rifles, I wouldn't guess them in a hundred years, but you guys are brighter than I am.

Who's next?

BTW, even with changes, nobody has all of them right!

The 400 Whelen is a 30-06 case that has been blown out to .445 at the shoulder and opened to accept a .411" diameter bullet. That isn't the cartridge the lineup, though the cartridge in the lineup is an "improved" version of that.

really... interesting... is it good for anything??? would seem like a relavively low powder charge for a 400??? like the classy version of a 45-70???

either way... I want one!

Well, as far as good for anything, guess that depends on your definition of good. With premium bullets of 350 grains some have reported (not me so I can't claim how valid it is) velocities of 2,300 fps or so. Should do the number on moose, bear, etc... 400 grain premium bullets are a little slower, around 2,000 fps from a 24" barrel. Not quite the 450/400, but respectable for North American hunting at close range.

The cartridge in the picture above does a tiny bit better, but not enough to really make a huge difference. It still doesn't exceed the 450/400 and it takes more pressure to get there.

What it does give is an easy conversion (though careful attention has to paid when cutting the chamber) for an '06 variant rebarrel. Rebarrel and no other changes have to be made.

If the rifle happens to be an '06 variant in the Winchester 1895 lever action, you can take advantage of the spitzer shaped bullets, something you can't do with the 45/70.

The 400 Whalen is good for EVERYTHING! That is, if you're good enough...

What about the headspace problems that I have read about with the 400 whelen? Do any of you guys that have them see this as being a problem? Not a whole lot of room for a shoulder in the old 06 case for this round.

Reading some of Elmer Kieths old books clearly showed that he liked the 400 whelen. It sure would make for a nice all round rifle for the thick stuff.

The Ackley version helps a bit. The secret of the 375 and 400 Whalen is overall ctg. length and careful reloading. Load so the bullet just touches the lands...They are both great smaller case capacity mediun/big bores for a maticulous reloader. The nice part about these calibers is that you can get 5 down in most standard actions and use them in standard length actions...easy conversions for the guys who like to screw around with somewhat unusual breeds of "cats".

I agree with the link 4seventy supplied. Basically, when many of the gunhouses tried to make the 400 Whelen, they kept the '06 body taper resulting in an insufficient shoulder. Also, it was doubtful that many paid enough attention to chambers.

In working with push feed rifles chambered for the various "improved" 400 Whelen variants, I haven't heard of any new headspace problems as long as the shoulder is kept at the .445" as determined by the good Colonel.
