"Wonder if they would do one in a larger cal?"

On what basis ?

Haven't you got enough choices in new DR's
on the market or are you thinking you might
get a "cheapy" ?

Ben,

I happened to live in Russia for some years when I worked for my family's business and I have seen some of the guns they make there at close. They have some small shops making really nice stuff - shotguns with hinged triggers and beautiful wood etc. The rifles used to be chambered for ammunition that was available there, like the 7.62 Mosin and the 9mm Medved. These days the RUssians make sniper rifles and semi auto sporting rifles in 9.3x64 which is probably why they decided to offer a double in this chambering.

I keep hearing from friends that there are many Russians hunting in Africa these days and that many of them have ordered guns from Ferlach, London etc. Even if the Tulsky Zavod does not offer larger bore rifles now, I think it is only a question of time before they do. There is a problem with dealing with them though - few people speak ENglish and unless you go with a dealer in the US who is experienced in dealing with the Russians you might as well give up trying to talk business with them. If you want to check with them, try contacting them through Russian American Armory in Indiana instead of e-mailing direct.

Another Russian company that makes really nice hunting guns (though not double rifles as far as I know) is KBP - try checking with them as well.

Good luck and let us all know how this goes. I might visit old friends in Russia sometime next year and if you buy a gun and are there at that time, I could probably organise some good hunting as well.

Mehul how are you?

Many thanks on the info, im not seriously interested just posted to see what everyone else thought...obviously if they made any caliber at a great price then sure, i guess i would look into it more.

Nigel-what did you answer for then?!....do you pay 2x the going rate for your guns by the way?...seem to remember you saying this and that rifle werent worth the price, regardless of condition.

Think all of us want to pay less for 'x' gun!!!!

If someone offers you a gun for £10,000 and another identical in every way for £5,000, are you going to take the £10k one just to tell everyone you paid that much for it?;)

Does that mean that because maybe my grandparents farm is worth about $8,000,000 that i should tell you you are a cheap skate because you want a place one tenth the size for $200,000??

hey ben

the toz guns are quite good, for rus guns anyway. there high end guns tend to be over the top concerning wood work(totempole look a like) and the metal work is a blend of las vegas in a carcrash with a bollywood womens dressroom. quite sad since the guns shoot great and balance nicely

they are quite pricy though start around 7.000 last i heard.

peter
p.s. looks like i have found a dealer for you in the london area, he got some of the bigger BP guns at a fair price, will send you a PM when i hook up with him.

Hi Peter

Yes i noticed, but thought maybe such a company would make a gun, simple one in a chosen caliber, for a more reasonable price! Quality of cut finish etc on these is questionable, but i have to say they are tough guns. Had a Baikal 12g once.......chrome bores built like a tool.

Thanks-would be interested though if all goes to plan i have a gun now! 577 of course.....caliber i wanted from the start!(bpe)

Best wishes

Ben

By the way TOZ make world class target firearms.

No empire, I'm not saying that.

Just IMHO, that if someone offered you a £10,000 for £5,000,
you still wouldn't buy it as you'd either want it cheaper
or you'd come up with some excuse why not to buy it.

I may state this and that gun aren't worth the price regardless of condition - a statement I make based on
what I think and you may think differently.

And yes, I do sometimes pay over the odds for a gun,
probably not 2x it's value but sometimes above market
price but always for a reason - rarity, price of it
will go up, buying a collection of guns in one hit etc etc..

Very true Al!

Reasonable price given that we are not talking about a Holland or anything near it, i guess for one in a basic nitro caliber, £2000-£3000 sort of like the 'pro hunter' ones from Heym......

I can buy a Krieghoff here for £4000 in .500 nitro last time i checked the new prices.....

Yep if i see a gun for half price then naturally i ask; 'why is it half price?' if it seems too good to be true.......

I was jumping when i saw that 10 bore for sale in Germany, but the seller made it as hard as he could, and i just couldnt see why he would sell an A+ condition 10b double rifle for what in the end was about $3,300 in your money.(2,400e)

Nigel-isnt answering something you dont want to answer, with a non-answer which is also irrelevant a trifle pointless? If i had all the guns you had i would be out shooting them....just my honest opinion.

Ben

If you can get a Heym PH for that, grab it! That's LESS than half price.

Ben,

I am not sure what the prices are but if you were to buy from the Russians in Russia, the guns would be much cheaper than buying through an importer, though the headaches of import licenses etc would be something that you would have to deal with. I do have some friends of my family, including old friends of my father's who used to hunt and my trip next year would be to meet some of them as they are getting on in age. My father died last year and I hope to meet them before it is too late.

I can tell you that my friend Alan is spot on about the quality of Russian guns. Their target guns are very nice - in the 80s their rapid fire pistols and free pistols did very well in Olympic competition and in any case Alan's Mrs is one of the top women shooters in the world today - he would know what good quality target guns are much better than I ever would.

I have seen some of their high grade shotguns in the past. They made all kinds - the highly embellished guns that Slavs seem to prefer as well as restrained models that are embellished like British guns. The fine doubles made there come with hinged front triggers, lovely fit and gold plated internal parts as well. I just might be able to try some of the newer guns out when I visit there. Let's see how this works out.

And I am with you on looking for bargains - in my case, being semi retired, I need to though, if I found myself wealthier, I would still look for them. Absolutely nothing wrong with that and it is, if you ask me, good sense as our ancestors used to say. A fool and his money and all that....

Good hunting!
