Zambia Hunt with Peter Chipmans outfit
      #84985 - 31/08/07 07:16 AM

Just got back from a 10 day hunt with Peters outfit, Sarge as PH. Had a great time. Saw lots of game. I picked up a extra buffalo tag this year to try to take 2 over my 10 days, with a hope of a common waterbuck also.We worked lone or very small bull only herds. Tracking and looking over what we had found. We were passing on soft horned bulls even though some were 40 and 42".Third day we got a very old, allmost hairless 38" bull after a 3 1/2 hour tracking, jumped him 4 times before we had a proper shot with my FN 404 jeffery, with 400gr. woodleigh softs. Bullet had 96% retention of weight. The second bull, taken day eight, was similar in age, quess 12 years, and was a little bigger at 40", also very deep boss mass as first one.Had 93% bullet retention with this one with the woodleigh softs.
We did find a nice 26" waterbuck on day 4. We saw a fair number of males and females over the 10 days, but the one I took was the best we saw. I pushed my range a bit to get him at 200 yds., again with the 404.Lots of elephant, some with very good ivory weights, some over 50 to even one 60+.
With the dry conditions more lions were moving in and around camp. We saw two 5-6 year old males one day, and on another day, a group of females trying to get a warthog, without success.
We saw a fair number of Kudu also. The best two were a 55 and maybe even a 57" one.We were not hunting them and their tags were gone or spoken for.
This is my second hunt with this outfit and I have no complaints. They did have some admitted problems with a "x"- partner from several years ago.I will not go into any of the details for a previous listing of a hunt problem listed by a forum member, but I asked and was told their version of the events. After hearing both sides,I will even more strongly support Peters outfit.

I have yet to put photos together, but I did review them on computer and they look good. I will take some of the woodleighs if anyone would like to see them also. I will figure out method to download per directions on site.

Still working on photos, since I have only been home 3 days from the hunt. I picked this older custom rifle up for a really great price about 3 years ago.FN mauser action with 24" kreiger barrel with sights , teflon finish, timney trigger, gray fiberglass stock by lonewolf.I put the swarovski Z-6 rail scope on this year(1-6x). Total rifle around 9 3/4 lb. with scope. Very accurate with woodleighs and TC solids , same point of impact, from superior ammo.Rifle will not take long bullets due to standard length magazine, but I really like the woodleigh, so I am happy with that limitation.I would like to have a nice wood stock put on some day but this rifle will see service in wet areas also, brown bear in alaska, in 2009, so I think the practical rifle approach will continue for a awhile yet.

I'm booked with Peter's outfit for a 14-day leopard, buffalo, and plainsgame safari next year, and I can't wait!

You will be very happy with your hunt. Who will be your PH, Sarge or Peter?
