500 A-Square cast bullet loads
      #84929 - 30/08/07 12:09 PM

Does anyone shoot cast bullets in this caliber? I am looking for some load suggestions.

Hi sixshooter,

here are a few load recipes which were working in my Heym Express in 500 A-Square.
Precision was fair to good (minute of plate at 50m), but I´m not a good shot with open sights.

brass: fireformed 460 Weatherby (volume ca. 150grs water, length: 73,3mm)
primer: Winchester large rifle
bullet: 492grs hard cast round nose with small meplat,
bullet dia. .510" (bullet length: 26,0mm)
I single loaded the cartridges, therefore I did not apply any crimp.
Maybe you can get better combustion with these fast burning powders with a good crimp.
(All rules of trying unknown load recipes apply)

Powder reload 1:
Hercules Unique, 24grs
OAL 90,0mm
shoots 4" low at 50m with standard sight setting
Load can be increased in my rifle.

Powder reload 2:
Kemira N320, 30grs
OAL 90,0mm
some black residue on brass mouth after firing in cold weather
(not enough pressure to seal the chamber)

Powder reload 3:
Kemira N320, 35grs
OAL 92,0mm
at 50m: point of impact is dead on
brass is shiny

I estimate the velocity between 1300 fps and 1400fps (for 2550 - 2900 Joule).
recoil is easy, and no barrel leading.

best regards
Rolf

Have you considered XMP5744 powder from Accurate Arms? I have used it for reduced loads in several calibers including the .500 NE for below 1500 fps velocities. Probably if you contact Accurate Arms they will suggest a starting load. In my .500 NE I use 45.0 grains behind a 500 grain cast bullet. There is a huge volume of empty space in the case, but I have not used a filler and have had no trouble.

Do you folks mind telling me how much your rifles weigh and if you have a muzzle brake on them?

Thanks,

Chuck

Hi Chuck,

my rifle is a Heym Express with a 60cm or 61cm barrel without any brake or Mag-Na Porting.
It has no Telescope on it and weighs unloaded about 4,6 kg.

regards
Rolf

Thanks Rolf, I have a CZ 550 in 375 H&H. I may eventually want to rebarrel it into more of a stopping rifle, I'm looking at the 470 Capstick and the 500 A-Square, but I'm concerned about the recoil from the 500. My rifle weighs 11 lbs without scope, I'd expect to add 2 more lbs if I go up in caliber.

Thanks,
Chuck

Hello Chuck,

the really fine thing about the 500 A-Square is the possibility to load it to the desired level.

I have loads with the Woodleigh 535grs and 570grs bullets with velocities for about 2150 fps.
=> the light version of the 500 Feffery and the standard load of the 500 NE

But also 600grs and 2300fps are possible, if you need it...

So even if your rifle is a little light for this caliber, I see no problem for shooting it.
(I strongly recommend cross bolts installed and glass bedding of the system.)

best regards
Rolf

PS: After all, since I received my Heym in .500 A-Square I never ever was attacked by an elephant in my garden!

A 500 A-Square just screams cast bullets at a moderate velocity. If you have one of these, then you will want to shoot it as often as you can, and cast bullets can allow that a bit more frequently, and a bit cheaper than jacketed bullets.

We have a couple of guys in the BGR club here in Australia that have Ruger #1's in 500 A-Square. They shoot a custom CBE lead bullet that weighs, I think, 800 grains with gas check. The bullet was designed for the 50 BMG.
They can easily achieve the 5300 ft/lb minimum muzzle energy requirement.

Regards,
David.

If it were me I would start with 40 gr of XMP5744 and work up to not more than 90 grains, behind a 500 or 600 grain bullet. XMP5744 is stable of a very wide range and you can pick a low point and work up. I have done this with several rifles including the .500 NE with 500 gr lead bullets, the .585 nyati with 1200 grain lead bullets, and the 470 NE with 500 grain lead bullets.

500grains,
I'd nearly give my firstborn to be able to get 5744 here in Australia, we don't/can't get any of the Accurate range here.

Maybe one day...

Could I please ask you to post some details of the cast loads you have worked up in those Big Bores, we'ed like to read about the loads and how you went about it please.

Regards,
David.
