South Australian Cuisine - the pie floater
      #8441 - 08/02/04 03:38 AM

A crusty hot meat pie swimming in a thick pea soup with a generous dollop of tomato sauce.

A traditional late night meal, not a snack, after a heavy session in the pub or for foolish visitors brave enough. Best served in the salubrious atmosphere of a street side pie cart near the railway station serenaded by bums and alcos.

Real double barrelled food.

MMMmmmmmmmm

An artists rendition.

Another pic.

But not correctly done. A true pie-floater chef always places the pie upside down.

A connoiseur's comments:

"Unique to the state of South Australia the pie floater is a minced meat pie floating is a sea of thick split pea soup and topped liberally with tomato sauce, which is more savoury that American ketchup. Typically, they are only available extremely late at night from caravans parked around inner Adelaide and individuals who have usually had far too much to drink consume them.

An unaesthetic element to the whole proceedings is the excellent colour and texture that they add to the vomit some time later."
