      #84360 - 21/08/07 08:06 PM

For those interested-

I was cruisin auction arms and came across an old square bridge 416 Rigby by JR Rigby. Interesting.Apparently it has had some reworking though--

At the current bid ($1520)...I'd rather have a Ruger RSM

I'm betting that the gun will eventually go for around $2200-$2500--If it was in pristine shape and had not been redone maybe alot more--

Interesting and nostalgic piece of history, apparently set up for open sights only, wonder what the date of manufacture was??

Serial number indicates 1940-1945. Obviously built in Germany shortly before the war, and merely retailed by Rigby in the UK. The "Not English Make" British proof marks, and case length mark are consistent with British proof of a foreign piece between 1925 and 1955. Rigby was at the Sackville address 1908 to 1955. Many people just don't realize how much pure retailing many of the British gunmakers actually did.

Entire rear sight assembly is a poor replacement. Looks like Rechnagel. The folding leaves don't lay flat, and the original wasn't made that way. I see what he means about the restock maybe being done by Rigby California. Poor, highly inappropriate American restock. Replacement trigger maybe? In good original condition, or even correctly refinished and restocked, it would have been worth at least quadruple the current bid. The cartridge was introduced in 1911 and British Rigby had sold less than 150 by 1991. Even as it is though, it's still ten times the rifle any Ruger will ever be.

I'm not surprised. It's probably worth that.

400nitroexpress really knows his stuff, the only thing that I can add is I have heard that a few more than 150 were made. I think the rifle was made around 1927-28 when I looked in the Mauser Book. This rifle shoul bring alot more even the bad rework on it.

I wondered what the Mauser number would indicate. I'm aware that tables exist, including one in Speed's book, but I don't have one. The Rigby table shows the Rigby number to be 1940-1945. Makes one wonder where it lay about in the intervening years. Bonham's just sold a pair of Lang double rifles that were delivered in 1927, but built in 1907. That kind of thing was more common than many think.

Pity that an American "gunsmith" got hold of it.

Hopp,

The auction I am following has not closed and the price was well up into the $5000 range ($5821 a minute ago).

I personally inspected the rifle on Tuesday and was not too impressed. Certainly it is not worth to me the astronomical price it seems to be headed for. It reminded me a great deal of a .416 I brought back from Kenya in the early 70's, which I later sold to a famous (or infamous) country music star who appears on Monday Night Football. I will have to check my records to verify that it's the same rifle.

The stock is definitely a replacement and the inletting leaves a good deal to be desired. However, the action has not been mutilated and the barrel seems to be in acceptable condition.

My reservations with rifles like this have to do with my reluctance to modify them to make them more useable. Although I hunt almost exclusively with scopes, I would hesitate to fit this original action with either scope bases or a receiver sight. Maybe a cocking piece sight would be the answer.

Nominate me as both a poor observer and poor judge of rifles at a minimum--

This reworked rifle I thought would go for $2500 sold for $6570.00!!

Yowsers!! What would a true cherry 416 Rigby have gone for-$20,000-30,000??

Absolutely astounding!!

You guys seriously underestimated that gun.

Get rid of the wood, it is still a Rigby by J R Rigby
and in the US, names seem to carry alot of weight.

That gun was always going to be worth that.

I remember one that brought that.

Given what this one needs to be right again, and what the work will cost, I think it brought top dollar.
