Dakota 76 375H&H
      #84023 - 14/08/07 08:45 AM

Does anyone out there have any experience loading 300gr. loads for a Dakota 375H&H? I recently bought this rifle and it shoots the Remington Safari 300gr. Swift A Srame loads well at the adverised velocity of 2500fps. When I load Nosler 300gr. to that velocity, I experience stiff bolt opening (and one blown primer). I am using a Oehler chronograph. I have owned three other 375's and they were not this sensitive at achieving that velocity. Yes, I know two identical model rifles are individuals. I am looking for a reference point from which to start. Before God and the world, I hold no one responsible for any data they suggest. Thanks in advance for any help.

I read an article some time ago and have read others on this site that suggest RL-15 works quite well in a lot of the bigger guns including the 470 and 500 Nitro..which has also always been my experience

Let me know how that works out.

Although it doesn't directly apply to the .375 H&H (and maybe not your source of load data), the H4895 loads I've used in Hornady's manual have always been too hot for the rifles I was loading for and I got the same symptoms you describe. I have an unused pound canister because I couldn't get loads I was happy with using that powder even when I reduced way below the starting loads.

It's limited information, and I'm sure there are good H4895 loads around, but thought I'd pass it along anyway.

When I reloaded for it I was using 71 grs of RL 15--shot very well in my Sako..I used Federal 215 Primers--300 gr Barnes Solids--shot under 1" at 100 yds.

*** I DID WORK MY WAY UP TO THIS STARTING AT 68 GRAINS--PLEASE BE CAREFUL--I TAKE NO RESPONSIBLITY FOR THIS INFO..

Thanks

4895 is a bit fast for those bullets.
In the H&H with 300 gr bullets I've settled on H4350, but any of the 4350s will do.
I use RL-15 with the 250-270 grainers with great success.

One of the loads you'll find in various manuals that works for me is 76 grains of H4350 under a 300 grain bullet. I currently use this powder {Short Cut version} but have also used IMR4350 and surplus IMR4350 at the same weights in the past. I have saved several 3-shot groups shot at 200 yards off the bench that measure under one inch center-to-center of the farthest shots with this load under the 300 grain Hornady RN. Of the 2,000 or so rounds I've shot from my SAKO .375 I am guessing 75% are this one load and I suspect it will continue to be so till the thing needs a new barrel.

It is the load I used in the bullet test thread and various velocities are shown there. Hovers from 2450-2500. Very low extreme spreads for multiple shots chrono'd.

It may be listed as max in some manuals so follow manual instructions for working up.

Thanks for your inputs. I went to the range today and tried some more RL-15 and H4350 loads. 76grs of H4350 seems to be the best- in this rifle anyway. 2475fps. and about an inch group. I'll take that. This rifle is rsther light for a 375- less than 9lbs. scoped. So, I don't expect in to be a tack driver. But it certainly is a nice weight to carry.

pajeff:

That 76/4350 load seems to be a winner in about every rifle I've heard or read about. As you note, it is not the fastest, but 20 years ago I tried it and have pretty much stuck with it ever since. Glad it works in yours!
