      #8384 - 07/02/04 08:12 AM

hello, i will be making my very first purchase on a new 470NE, i have been contemplating either a chapuis or b.searcy. there both relativly close in price. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. also a friend of mine suggested i sould be able to find a used jaeger or francotte in the same ball park?? i don't know anything about them.

You must understand this is only my opinion, and has no bearing on what one MUST DO!

In my opinion, the B.Searcy has more going for it than the Chapuis! That said, if you want the rifle TODAY, then the Chapuis is the way to go, between the two you mention. The Searcy is made to fit you, and there is about a 7 month wait to take delivery. This isn't all bad, because only half is due on order, and you have 7 months to pay it off. The chapuis is an off the shelf, "one size fits all" rifle, and must be paid for up front! Another thing is, the Searcy is made in the USA, and Butch Searcy is but a phone call away, and he stands behind his product! His latest product is the PH model, and is very slim, and trim, compared to his older field grade! Either way you go, you don't loose, both are fine double rifles, and both will serve well, if you do your part!

I handled quite a few double rifles at the recent SCI convention and I must admit I was very impressed with Searcy's new PH model...much better feeling than his earlier guns. The ones I looked at were heavier than I like but...they were in big-bores and really needed it BUT they were extremely well-balanced ...much more so than many of the big-bores I picked up.

With all the super-saver airfares available why not hop a flight and go over what you want and need with Searcy in person...the extra couple hundred dollars spent would be good insurance.......assuming, of course, you live in the USA.

Excellent Idea! Butch will talk to you personally, and the measurements will be spot on!

you know thats not a bad idea, I would get fitted better than trying to measure myself. I do live in newengland, so i could fly out there, just got to find the time between work.

I don't know where you live but many good smiths can take your measurements for you...then send them to Butch...You made a very good decision IMO...Gives us a state and we can probably get you to a good smith...

Isn't NECG up in your neck of the woods? I don't remember where but know they are in the NE corner of the country. They play around with a bunch of stuff and that may help as far as getting fitted.
