Back from Africa!!
      #83239 - 29/07/07 08:36 PM

Finally figured how to do somethimg with the pictures--

This is a repost from 7/26 with pictures added--

Just got back from Africa today from an 8 day plains game safari.

It was fantastic and I took 6 animals-A Mountain Zebra at 270yds, a Black Gnu(wildebeest) at 225 yds,a Gemsbok at 170 yards, and an impala, kudu, and warthog inside of 100yds.

I was using a 338 WM with 225 gr Swift A frames and they penetrated the gemsboks chest completely while NOT exiting the Zebra x 2 hits at distance or the gnu-man those animals are tough!!Everything else was a pass thru.

I did lose an Eland hit very hard in the chest at 250 yds on level ground through an opening in dense bush.Heard the impact distinctly. He looked VERY BIG and his eland group was watching us at dusk preventing a closer stalk. It was very dry high thick brush, and searching a even this section of 77,000 hunting acres in heavy thorned brush was daunting. Blood but no animal. Arghh!! Maybe the remains of the animal will turn up. I am sure that animal is dead but lost. That made me ill.I have made that game shot many times.

Kudos to Kathi Klimes of Wild Travel for the great seats on the cattle car ride on the SAA Joberg express from Dulles and Optima for shepherding my rifle/baggage through Joberg .Optima spoke with some handlers, ID'd the specific luggage and rifle then took me to the front of the line through customs/screening both entering and leaving Africa.

Some pictures--

Upon reflection would I use the same 338 WM rifle??

Probably not!!

Compensating for the wind gusting to 20+ mph was annoying and a challenge for taking the sharp eyed Black gnu after multiple stalks to get to within 225 yds.

I hate to say it but if I were to do the same things again,4 stalks, and 3 ambushes I would use my 338-378 WBY shooting 250gr A Frames at 3000 fps. Less wind effect and flatter trajectory.Under less unusual conditions of severe drought not concentrating the animals so much with the resultant zillions of animal tracks/sign and with more timely selective tracking/stalking of any plains game taken I feel my 35 Whelen bolt would do just fine and be just as exciting.

Those photos are really nice. My favorite is the one of the Giraffes. It looks like you took some very nice trophies too. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Great photos and great animals. I didn't lose my eland but passed a couple being cautious after hearing countless stories of lost animals. They are truly large beasts.

Giraffe stuff-- Gentle giants who are great to watch.Hunters were told to beware getting to close-They are not defenseless- they can even kill lions with one kick!!

Look close, not genetic mutation but 2 male animals moving together--

A giraffe pod; we counted 11 animals total--

Can you see the giraffe who ran off and thinks he is hiding behind the tree??
