To the PHs... how good do I need to be?
      #8270 - 06/02/04 08:21 AM

talking to my dad the other day, and we were kicking around the whole "acceptable accuracy" thing, as he's skeptical of taking me to africa without either of us having harvested all that many rifle-kills in our lives. (he's got 4-5, I have 2... I have a few hundred shot-gun kills, he must have 20,000 or more).

so the question becomes... what do you deem acceptable, and at what ranges are you looking for performance?

lets NOT talk DG hunts, as that will be a second or even third trip... lets talk plains game in RSA and Namibia.

(btw, we both shoot Mausers, him a 30-06, me a 35 Whelen)... and yes, I know that at age 25 I should be paying my own way... but hey, if he offers???

If you can hit a rugby ball or American football at 75 yards then you're good enough.....part of the PHs job is to assess the hunting clients abilities and either give them a bit of coaching or just to get them a bit closer than normal before the shot if he thinks its necessary.

Don't let inexperience put you off...... we all have to have first's in life.... including PHs. There's not a single one of us who hasn't had to shoot his first Elephant, his first Buffalo and so on...... but that's part of the fun.

I took a client to Tanzania last year who is 70 years old. He had never even picked up a rifle until less than 5 years ago and he shot shed loads of game including Buffalo & Lion. If he can do it at his age then so can you and your Father .....

I'd say go for it while you both can. The best hunt anyone can ever have is a Father & son hunt.... it will be something that will share for the rest of your lives.

how about a basket-ball at 50 with open sights and bad light??? (seriously did that on saturday with the 375... BOOOOOOOM!) So, if I can keep 90% inside a 4-inch circle at 100, I'm good?? (can't do it true off-hand yet, I'll get there though).

thanks man, I love hunting with my dad, and africa will really put us on even ground... shooting game in an arena neither of us in familiar with... which makes me look less pathetic!!! (he doesn't like set shots... he prefers the animal to be running... freak).

while I've got your attention... bird hunting in africa? worth it and where??? dad says no hunting trips that don't involve at least one day of birds (or fishing).

again, thanks!

The standard I impose on myself is to be able to hit a 10 inch diameter paper plate at the distance I choose to shoot. If I can't hit it 9 out of 10 times from field positions (not from a bench), it's too far for me to shoot.

What if you play golf?

But I think it would be good to be able to hit that ball (ie the larger ones) off hand at that range. With a bit of practice it doesn't take long.

African bird shooting can be great.... we have a nice set-up in the Free State of RSA where you can shoot good bags of: guineafowl, francolin, pigeons, doves, quail, ducks, & geese. Shooting methods vary from driven to pointers to flighted etc. Food & accommodation is truly excellent. Daily rate is US$300 per hunter per day.....all inclusive. Most hunting areas can also arrange the odd few hours shooting as well, but not so organised as the Free State shoot.

By the way........what's golf?

Hell, I can still drive a golf ball over 400 yards any day of the week. I just have to take it with me in the car.

What caliber and load are you using on those golfers? Are you trophy hunting or just shooting them because they're a pest?

Around here they are mostly pests. We have areas that are really nice, parklike. Smooth and nicely cut grass. Long meadows for shooting, some up to 400 yards long. Some really nice ponds that attract Geese and Ducks. A great place to hunt.

Except for those pesky golfers. They spoil it for everyone with their electric four wheelers, flashy clothes, loud yells. FOUR, what the Hell kind of call is that? They always travel in groups and always seem to be looking for something that they have lost. A perplexing bunch.

We shoot'em whenever we can.

Sounds to me like a bunch of us need to get together and have a "drive" in one of those "parks" you're talking about. Do that once or twice a month and we could rid those nice parks of those pest

I've found 25-06 to be effective, but what really stops them cold is a hot-loaded 30-06 with a 147gr FMJ!

I brought a friend to RSA last year and he shot his first two animals with a rifle during the safari (Impala and Duiker) with a borrowed 375 H&H. He had only a couple of hundred birds before that.

Golf is for sissies...

Some of us old sissies shoot back, and pretty damned straight on.

I take out my golf clubs once every year, just to remind myself that I can get the same great feeling by poking myself in the eye for three hours straight and not have to pay a $120.00 greens fee and $40.00 cart rental. Hell, that will buy most of a box of 470 NE ammo.

Back to the subject...how good a golfer do I have to be..................?

Do you shoot them on the way out or coming back to the "club" watering hole? I personally think the Sharps would be good set up where I could nail them out in the middle of their gathering place. Could get a few before they got to the cover of the watering hole! That's a fact!

I hear their skins are quite nice. Sort of tartan like. The Scots first starting harvesting them for their tartan skins at a place called St Andrews. Makes a nice rug.

Here they are a pest too. The parks they inhabit have nice populations of bunnies but these damned golfers keep scaring them back into the bushes.

I understand their call "Four" is a call prior to their inane searching obsession in bushes. Perhaps to announce to others it time to root around in the bushes for a while.

I have a theory that they think they little white balls are like some sort of boomerang. They hit them as far away as possible. But they don't come back. Then they look for them and get excited again when they find them. They try again but it still doesn't come back. They do not learn and this habit can you used to the hunters advantage.

A clever idea is to build a hide. Then cut the grass short in a circle and plant a flag in the middle of it. Small flags seem to attract them like bees to honey for some reason. Then place a steel jaw trap in a little hole just bigger than a hand opened. Reverse the teeth on the trap so the caught "golfer" lasts all day. They seem to have to feel around in these holes if placed near the flag. This is sort of like the Bushman/fruit/monkey trap idea in the Kalahari/Namib. It is a mistake to put your own white ball in the hole. They like to put their white ball in the hole. When they do this they really get excited and you are sure to catch one as they can't resist putting their hand into the hole.

You have to be patient though as they can take an awfully long time to get to the flag sometimes.

When caught they tend to squeal a lot but this is good bait as they attract other "golfers" and a good cull can be done.

If you pick the right day you can harvest 100% female "golfers". Their tartan "skins" come off very nicely too and if you then let them go, they have regrown tartan next time you see them, sort of like wool on a sheep.

The males are often red in the face and bluster around a lot and do not smell as nice when the tartan skins are removed.

Make up a really nice rug with all those tartan skins.

G-O-L-F-S...oh, golfs...

Uncle Jed went hunting for them on a golf pasture, but all he got was Birdies and Bogies.

Granny tried to boil'm tender, but they was too tough to even make thin broth.

Jethro et a whole bucket of 'm, but was still hungry.

And, Ellie Mae tried to feed 'm to her coon, but it spit 'm back at her.

According to Uncle Jed, they lives in holes out in the golf pasture on big flat mounds, down shallow holes with sticks with flags in'm. He knowed it was where they lived 'cause the grass was all chewed real short around their dens.

I like Nitro's method. I'll have to try the Australian Method one day.

We do it a little diffently. We go to the store and buy golfbait. It is a small package of little round white balls, about the size of a Plum. We take the golfbait out to the field and find a semi-secluded spot along the edge. You want to pick a spot that is private but not to hidden so the 'Golfers' can find the golfbait. They are not too bright, you know, and have a hard time finding what they have lost.

When a Golfer comes along they will immediately spot the bait but will pretend not too. They will siddle up to it and look around uneasily, they are very wary at this point.
They will bend over and paw through the bait, looking at each one carefully. Once again they will look around and then they will kick or throw one of the golfbaits onto the Field. Why they do this is a mystery that remains unsolved.

Eventually, after the golfbait has been thrown on the Field, the Golfer will bend over and start to put the rest of the bait in his flashy clothes. This is when you shoot. Wait until they are bent over and shoot them in the Butt. This is where there brains are reputed to be. It also makes them flop around and make all kinds of noise, quite funny actually.

If you bait like this you can be much closer than if you try to shoot them in the middle of the Field. This allows you to use your Double Rifle and it's arcing trajectory. If you chose to be a sniper than shoot them with your flat shooting magnum in the middle of the Field.

It is considered terribly unsporting to shoot them at the 'Club'. They sit out side, drink and get loud and obnoxious. This would be the place to Herd Shoot but it is too easy. Maybe as a 'Last Day of the Hunt' shoot.

This could all lead up to a new thread...

IS A DOUBLE BARREL SAND WEDGE BETTER THAN A TOE IRON???

DB sand wedge: true magnum; hits'm hard!

Toe iron: fast, silent, deadly accurate!

When is their mating season or rut? Was also wondering what distress call a guy could use to call them in? Maybe a "golfer chick" in heat tape? They must be an interesting species to watch, cause I've noticed certain times of the year people flock in by the thousands to sit and watch them. I figure those that are watching must not have anything better to do.
