shooting roos in NSW
      #82622 - 18/07/07 06:06 PM

Does anyone know what are the legal requirements to legally shoot roos in NSW?

More to the point is it a matter of getting an add on to your license to shoot roos, or is it a culling permit for a given time?

Even though im not old enough, I hate Gough Whitlam because of this.

GoneShootin

I am not aware you can get a license to shoot roos in NSW as a sporting shooter ?? If you have seen some reference to this, please post it as it would be new to me.

Culling permits are in most states available under two methods:
1. Available to the landowner for use by a professional licensed roo shooter for commercial harvesting; and
2. Available to the landowner as a pest destruction permit.

Sporting shooters might get access to no. 2 above if the find a landowner who gives them access.

Queensland does have a sporting permit available if they have signed agreement by a landowner and permits up to fifty roos to be shot.

Lots of wallabies are also culled in Tasmania.

For specific roo shooting requirements in NSW try a search.

Game Council illegal hunting page but note reference to kangaroo hunting impact study

Case Study: licensed hunters deter criminals
A grazier in the Tamworth district has enlisted the help of six local conservation hunters licensed by Game Council NSW to help control pigs, foxes and rabbits on his 1600 acre property.

Facilitated by the local Game Manager, the licensed hunters keep the landholder – who doesn’t reside on the property – abreast of their movements, including regular reports on species seen and taken. The hunters are also helping control kangaroos via the NPWS Kangaroo Management Plan.

The licence holders, who are all covered by Game Council’s $10m public liability insurance, are members of Game Council ‘Approved Hunting Organisation’ the North West Hunting Club. The grazier has reported that the presence of accountable, licensed hunters has ended illegal hunting on his property.

Senate report

Quote:

The hunting of kangaroos for personal use is permitted in Queensland (for Macropus rufus and M. giganteus), but in New South Wales and Victoria recreational hunting of kangaroos is illegal. Pest eradication licences can be obtained in those states to cull kangaroos, but only by licensed professional shooters. In New South Wales, kangaroo carcases can be used commercially, but in Victoria they cannot and some 30,000 kangaroo carcases are buried annually. In Tasmania, two species of macropod can be harvested, Bennett's wallaby and the Tasmanian pademelon, by both recreational and commercial shooters. [3]

Wasn't it Gough Whitlam who introduced the laws that made shooting roos illegal!

I guess what i would like is not available in NSW. Why is it that its always the "other" state which has the better system.

I don't know, I wasn't here in Aust in 1975
and I don't have a law book in front of me,
or the time to read it before I pull the trigger !!!!

Victoria's worse mate, you can shoot on a farmers
permit (if your names on it) but your not even allowed
to pick them up !!!

At least in NSW they get to use the meat / skins etc.
