Present and future of the .404 Jeffery?
      #82558 - 17/07/07 01:43 AM

Well, what is it?

This caliber has always appealed to me but it does look like it has pretty much been run out of town by the various .416's. Anybody have any opinions as to whether it will still be with us {...and ammo and bullets made for it...} a decade or so from now?

Any African Game Departments still use it?

Any factory rifles presently chamber it?

9,3X57,
I think it’s a grand cartridge that offers plenty of performance without a lot of fuss. The factory rifles I know of are Heym Express and Mauser 03, plus a few “semi customs” from smaller makers and CZ. Hopefully Winchester, Kimber or Ruger will chamber sheep rifles in 404 Jeffery

RWS, Norma and Kynoch offer readily available ammo and today it is loaded to similar performance as 416 rem and 416 Rigby. 404 Jeffery fits nicely into a stretched standard 98 or an action suitable for 375H&H.

Supplies of brass, dies and bullets are better than in a long time

I just picked up a CZ550 in 404 Jeffery from Cabela's.
Ammo seems to be hard to find, so far I've ordered a wallet from Midway,
they only had one available. I guess it's time to learn how to reload.

It will be around for as long as we can own guns.

Has the tradition, performance/recoil package and can be done in normal size actions.

No, it won't be available in the latest Vanguard/Howa or Rem 700 but who cares

I love this caliber and think it makes a great all round caliber for most types of African hunting.
There are still a few 404s floating around some of Africa's game departments.

I do not own one and have never even seen one, but the paper ballistics are quite appealing to me, especially since factory jacketed bullet ballistics {of the old 400/2150 load} could pretty easily be duplicated by cast bullets which would make this thing a dandy for cheap plinking with ammo that would probably maintain same POI to the fatory loads.

I do notice, however, not many jacketed component bullets available, in fact, nothing like that available for the .416's.

My limited experience with the 404 untill now has been an good soft point bullet, an good solid, and an good lead bullet is actually what you need for fodder for the .404 .

As far as i rember here now of the various manufactures, Asquare makes their Trio of bullets, Rhino, swift, woodleigh, makes 350 grain up to 450 grain, Ken Stewart in South Africa, Tonheim PBP here in Norway makes an 300 grain HP and an 400 grain solid in copper or brontze, , Barnes , Lutz Møller in Germany, so its alright to get bullets for the Jeffery today.

My Game Scout, Juma, in Tanzania carried an old 404 Jeffery. He had exactly one round of ammo for the rifle. The round must have been 30 years old and the bullet was pushed so deep in the case that the case neck was past the beginning of the olgive of the bullet.

That is a priceless photo.

Seriously. That is Africa.
