Ruger #1 .500 NE
      #82546 - 16/07/07 11:03 PM

Well it's done! The evil thoughts put into my mind by you blokes has finally prevailed....
today I took a deep breath, picked up the phone, pulled out the card and purchased a Ruger #1 in .500 NE. Between it, the 16 bore cape gun and the 9.3 x 74 Baikal u/o DR, I should be able to keep myself amused for a while working out loads etc. You really are a bad influence. (just joking)
Now I wonder which will arrive first???

All the best, Ian.

Watto,
Would your 500 happen to have been the one on usedguns.com.au? Noticed that web site had one for sale a week or so ago.

Regards,
David.

Watto,
Congratulations, it belonged to a good mate of mine that used to shoot BGR events up here with it. He has a few shoulder problems and had to sell all his big calibres.
You have got a good one, it shoots like a house on fire.

Regards,
David.

I have had a Ruger # 1 in 3 1/4" 500 nitro for about 2 years now. I have some pretty hot loaded stuff that gets 2365 ft/sec with 570 grain bullets. My gun weighs exactly 10.0 lbs. It is fun to shoot and one of my most accurate guns. I hope you enjoy your new custom Ruger.

G'day David,

Any chance of asking your mate if he would mind me getting in touch with him with a few questions about the rifle and the loads he used? If he was happy with the idea maybe you could relay a number I could contact him in PM. If that would not be too much trouble it would be greatly appreciated.

With Thanks,

Ian.

G'day Bigdog,

that sounds like a pretty mean load. What have you got behind that bullet, if you don't mind me asking. What does the energy work out to?

Ian.

Watto,
It works out to about 7076 ft lbs of energy. I had 80 rounds loaded by Kola at Stars and Stripes Ammo in Florida. They will load a lot of wildcat cartridges. He has loaded some hot rounds for my 585 wells magnum also. I do not have the powder charge. He would only load them that hot for a Ruger # one because of the strength of their actions. These loads are NOT meant to be used in a double rifle. Turn around time was about 6 weeks. I have used Stars and Stripes several times over the past several years. They are very knowledgeable and professional.I did not think that the recoil was all that bad. My Ruger does have a 28" barrel, a little long, but it works.

Do you know who made it? I spoke to Hamilton Bowen a couple of times about doing this but never started the project. Would be nice to have a scoped single to go with a double in the same caliber...for the man who has everything.

My 500 nitro Ruger # 1 was made by Tom Opal in Montana, weighs 10 lbs and has a 28" Bauska barrel with express sights. The custom stock is patterned after a vintage Alexander Henry rifle, the barrel is .975" dia. I traded a couple of rifles to a guy in Alaska about 3 years ago for it.

All the best, Ian.

Check with these folks. They can rebarrel a #1 for you.
