Double vs bolt article
      #82457 - 15/07/07 03:45 AM

Congratulations to Bill Stewart on his article about double guns vs. bolt guns for elephant hunting (African Hunter, number 2 of 2007). I would offer two comments in response to the article:

1. Bill says he has never knocked an elephant down or turned it with a near miss to the brain. He has hunted with calibers from 416 Taylor to 470 NE. My personal experience is that elephants always turn or drop with a near miss to the brain. I have used 500 NE, .505 Gibbs and .585 Nyati. Perhaps the larger calibers are what account for knockdowns.

2. The article includes a pic of Ian Nyschens hunting elephant in a double breasted suit. And now I feel somewhat ashamed of my hobo hunting attire which consists of cutoff jeans and a fishing shirt. Should we return to wearing formal attire for hunting? Perhaps the British members of the forum can offer the best guidance on this point.

500grains, I believe you are fighting a lost battle in suggesting that hunters should take a gander in the mirror, see the evil of their ways and elevate their standards of attire.

I made an attempt to convert the heathen on their choice of mere haberdashery and found that the war is lost.

Alas, the Age of the Common Man has insidiously invected all ranks, rates and classes...

Alas it is very difficult and or expensive to get well tailored safari clothes it seems.

I had to go to loads of places just to get nice shirts with button fold back sleves before my trip.

But at least my old Christie felt hat was appriciated, apparently they cant get them in SA anymore.

Regards

When I arrived in Nairobi for my first hunt, I was promptly hustled over to the Indian tailor, who whipped out his tape and went through the measuring routine. I went off to Tsavo National Park for a week to get acclimatized, and by the time I was back and ready to strike out, there was my outfit.

However, I had to settle for "birdshooters" off the shelf, with crepe soles. Next trip, I knew better, and brought along my Marine "boondockers" with their Munson last. Never a blister nor a sore foot after that. No thorn penetration either.

I don't usually read my own stuff, but I don't remember saying that! I don't know what if anything the editors might have changed/deleted.

Of course I've knocked down elephant from near misses, but is not a guaranteed result. I had one cow keep coming after two near misses, when a 460 Wby and a 470 NE to her forehead failed to even make her flinch.

With Bramble and Xausa around, maybe there is hope...

That's right!

Get off your keester and get yourself into a pair of plus fours and a Norfolk jacket {wool tweed of course}!

Anybody remember seeing Gregor Woods and his Deerstalker?

...fortunately no one knows what I go poking around in the woods wearing...

I read in the Obituary column of Magnum May 2007 that Ian Nyschens has passed on.
The final comment was:-

I have a 58 cal Muzzleloading double rifle, and I'd like to have some period clothing including a regimental pith helmet, to go along with my elephant hide loader's shoulder bag, and copper powder flask! I think that would be fun at some of the DRSS shoots/hunts in Texas!
