The invitation arrived today
      #82391 - 13/07/07 11:12 PM

for me to go and hunt a class 1 Chamois (= over 8 years of age) on the Swarovski hunting grounds. Needless to say, I feel elated...

I will be accompanied by my son-in-law Christopher who will act as an interpreter (he's German and a hunter too)and we will arrive on 11th/08. We'll stay between 2-4 days, according to the hunting and/or weather (Alps mountains) gods. I'll take along my Sauer 202 with its new .30-06 barrel. Count on me to keep you posted + pics.

Very interesting.

Can you give us a bit of history on how you got the invitation and also on the hunting area? How many hectares is it? Is the hunting area entirely owned by Swarovski? What can the weather be like then? We have no big game or deer season open that early, so that is also interesting.

That's right, not far from Innsbrück, near Absam where the Swarovski factory is located. I've never been in the Gnadenwald and don't know much about it, except that it is pretty steep mountain country with plenty of game and that the hunting rights belong to Swarovski. Some years ago, I went into the Alps nearby and was surprised to find snow as late as end of July.

I'm back from Austria, having had one of the best hunting experiences in my life. The weather was awful, with lots of rain and mist (clouds actually). The 3 of us ("berufsjäger" Albert, my son-in-law Christopher and myself) hunted at 1500 m in a very hard terrain. I suffered but was glad that I trained during the preceding month and stopped smoking 9 months ago. Still the stalking was pretty steep and I suffered from vertigo several times (I never admitted, of course…). During our first day, we saw 3 Chamois, a young, an unsuitable buck (I was after a class 1 buck) and finally this one. We spotted him at 100m, walking the 5 meters that separated him from the cover and the rest happened very fast. I started to raise my bino's but the PH who had recognized the buck whispered : "nein, schiessen, schnell !". I dropped into position and let go 5 cm forward of the shoulder to compensate for the walking. The buck stopped, then took a step backwards before his hindquarters let go. He toppled over on his back and rolled downwards for a few meters on the grassy slope, never moving again. All in all, it was over in 3-4 seconds, not leaving me the time to get nervous, so that I reacted by reflex.

However, nervous I became when we stood before him, a giant buck counting 13 growing rings = aged 13 ! The 3 PH who saw him afterwards had good hopes for C.I.C. Gold ?!? Anyway, I'll have to wait till May 2008 before collecting the trophy as he will participate in the 2007 selection for "best chamois of Tyrol".

Needless to say, I'm elated for having confirmed the French saying "point n'est besoin d'être beau pour avoir de la chance" (there's no need to be handsome to have luck).

congratulations andré

amasing buck, i think the reason you had a hard time walking up that hill was the weight of diana sitting on your shoulder.

Fantastic chamois Andre! Congratulations and well done.

Well done on the quick shot too. No need for binoculars when there is a good one in front of you!

Lucky man.

Thanks for the photos and story.

How are are you going to have him mounted - Euro skull cap or shoulder mount?

It will be the Euro mount (CIC cut) as it has to be officially scored in the 2007 Tirolian selection. Actually, I had no time to see the horns and shot fast, under pressure of my PH who was anxious to see the Chamois covering those few meters and disappear in the bushes. Then, the PH started smoking the traditional "waiting cigarette", then a second one and even lighted a third one, teasing me all the time about the small horns of the "young" Chamois I just shot. I remained ice cool, not wanting to give in to his teasing but was boiling inside to rush to the place where the animal fell. So, I told Herr Unterberger that 1 cigarette was OK as far as tradition had to be respected, 2 cigarettes were overkill IMHO, but 3 cigarettes would not only pose a definite hasard to his health but in the meantime my Chamois might start to rot... We ended up laughing and started the climb, where he beat me by far and was first to arrive, being at least as anxious to see the beast.

Wow! Congratulations with your fantastic Chamois André! You're a lucky man to have had such a great opportunity.

Do you have any more pictures of the surrounding terrain?

Erik

Well, the going was tough and the rain and fog (clouds actually) prevented us from making photos of the surroundings. However, I scanned this landscape pic of the area from the hotel catalog. The red circle on the right in the valley is Absam (hotel location + Swarovski optics plant) and the arrow on the left is the Gnadenwald (there we hunted at 1500 meters, where the forrest meets the rocks). NB.: the distant city seen on top, where the valley turns left, is Innsbruck, capital of Tirol.

Finally, one year later, I received my trophy from Austria. It went through the national trophy contest and came out with a C.I.C. bronze medal (103.9 points, barely missing silver by 1.1 pt.).

Anyway, whatever the quotation, I'll forever cherish the memory of a great hunt and challenge.

Bravo André

A nice buck, really.
What's puzzling me is the colour of the chamois buck.
Last week a close friend shot one in Austria, and he also display a grey coat. My partners hunted in Gap (Alps France) last week (for once I didn't tag along) and all their bucks are black. I wonder why in Austria the chamois buck have the same coat as the females?
A pity I was busy, I was invited in Austria and in Gap.
3 weeks ago, I spent a week end in the Alps (Morzine-Avoriaz). I was invited to shoot a chamois buck. One came like a greased
lightning running at 120 m and I missed. 3 other huntes missed as well. But the atmosphere was very friendly and I had a great time with colorful people.
Congratulations again for a great trophy. I especially enjoy the width of the trophy.

This is the summer coat. The winter coat is black and grows a trophy "brush" on the back.

Thanks André

I didn't notice that you shot your chamois in August.
but what about an Austrian chamois buck grey in September (my hunting partner CV) and the other austrian buck in October (my friend CN) grey as at the same moment they are black in France???????????

Maybe there could be some delay before Chamois from different locations start to moult ( = same as Roe-, and Red deer), according to available food, weather conditions, age, etc. Normally, shedding may start as per september. Of course, we're talking about the Alpine Chamois (Rupicapra Rupicapra) which differs from his Pyrenean cousin, the Izard (Rupricapra Pyrenaïca). The latter is not only smaller but he differs in colour too : red in summer and dark brown/grey in winter. This being said, I'm not a specialist in Chamois (I shot only one !). Mouse93 intimately knows them and maybe he could " shed " - pun intended...- some light on the subject...
