Logic would say, yes, weight does make a difference--also it creates a greater possibilty to shearing off screws on the mounts..bases, etc as noted in the SCI article..they completely sheared off several screws during the test.. seriously , if you can read both parts and the new one yet to be released--very informative..

For those interested and have access to RIFLE SHOOTER magazine--really good article in there this month by Terry Wieland who tested 11 different scopes--which included the usual suspects--Leupold, Nikon, Swarovski, Zeiss...

Terry does NOT hold any punches and basically tells it like it is..
also good discussion in what to look for in a dangerous game scope...

Schmidt and Bender have a good reputation over here, but I haven't personally tried one on a DG rifle

Schmidt and Bender are actually mentioned and reviewed in the article I mentioned above--their optical clarity is second to none--I have used them and they are great.. the problem suggested in this article with them however is their weight--they are a heavier scope just as the new Swarovski 1 to 6 --which in turn puts added stress on the scope mount and a higher possiblity of failure to that mounting system, whatever that may be--in the test done by SCI for dangerous game scopes on an unbraked .460 Weatherby--they were actually shearing off screws from recoil--

Read a great article comparing DG scopes in Rifle Shooter
Mag. It touts the Leupold 1.5x 5 x 20 with its light weight and 5.3"-3.7" eye relief. It is not so kind to S&B, Swarovski, Zeiss, et al due to other features.

The article discusses the Trijicon 1.25x 4x 24 accupoint at 11.6 ounces and 5"-4.75" eye relief.Very interesting!!

The accupoint sound like one I want to try!! Wonder how it will hold up on my 416??

Per the people I have visited with on the Trijicon, there have been no problems--I just read another article as well that also really liked it for those that like that type of reticle.

I am also curious to read the last article which will be in the next SCI magazine this month--this was the test where they shot 60 rounds out of a 460 unbraked Weatherby per scope they tested..

It appeared limited eye relief and weight were the major complaints on the dangerous game scopes..

If the Trijicon could take that kind of Weatherby "heat" I would definitely want to try it.

Try as I might I am still far better with a scoped rifle than iron sights. My aging eyes are not helping things either.

Oh Well--

I just joined SCI, how does one order back issues of their magazine? Did they review the Leupold 1.5 - 5x 20mm ? That's the scope I'm thinking of buying for my 375 H&H.

Thanks,

Chuck

I believe if you contact their main office --go on line--you will be able to get in touch with them.. If this does not work out let me know--I can make copies and scan them into my email.. and forward them to you..

I can't remember without going back and looking but I believe they did either the 1.5 to 5 or the 1.75 to 6--but as a dangerous game scope you can not go wrong with either--I have the 1.5 to5 on my Sako .375 and it works great--I have the 1.75-6 on both of my .416's and like them as well--I went with the HEAVY cross hair and it shows up well in thick brush..

PM me if you need more info

thx

Great scope for the 375, as is Ripp of the 1.75 - 6.

I have one of each and they are a top scope for that calibre.

Thanks to both of you! I'll try and get the back issues, but will go with the 1.5 - 5x 20mm.

optically the best scope worldwide could well be the svarowski, although for a dangerous game scope used only in daylight I would prefer one of the premium leupolds (1,75-6x32, 1-5x20) because the european glasses are much heavier than the leupolds (about 25-30%!), in a hard-kicking rifle that means also much more wear on the glasses and mounts.....

Whatever happened to the Nickel with its beautiful blending of internal and external fields, non-critical eye relief? S&B used to advertise that as their premium product, as I recall.

The Kahles was returned in October.
It went back to Austria for the repair.
I have not tested it yet ; but it
appears to be repaired. The 458WM will
do the test.

I have a Leupold VX's on both my 375 and 460 for the last 9 years of abuse, and they hold up good.

I'm getting a new 375 .. so right now I'm looking at getting the Leupold VX-3 with the illuminated cross hairs. They make a VX-7 also but it didn't seam to be worth the difference in price.

It comes in a 2.5-8, 3.5-10 or 4.5-14 by 50mm so lots of light and about 5" of eye relief.

I tried it out yesterday and it worked good, so that is what I'm going with for my 375.

You can find them for about $500 ... if you have unlimited funds, then those ones above are better.

Me... I'll spend that extra $1500 on my next hunt.

I don't have many postson here, but I do have some top 10 world records.

The articles I have read on the VX-7--is that they are unusually heavy compared to the VX-3--there is concern as to durability in relation to weight of scope versus recoil of said big bore rifle..
I agree with you--have many of the vx-3's and love them..also have 1.5 to 5's or 1.75-6 on my dangerous game rifles with no problems to date..

I certainly rate my VX3 - they are great scopes. However, for a .375 I might be tempted to go for something witha slightly larger objective diameter such as a 32 or even 40. It very much depends on what the rifle is to be used for and all boils down to versatitlity (there I did it - used Boddington´s latest catchphrase - damn!)

I've lusted after the S&B flashdot for sometime now .. They are spendy ..

That said , all I use is the Vari-X/VXIII 1.5-5x20 Loopys .. I have four at the moment .. Nary a problem , they have all crossed the pond without any issues ..

I too can speak for Loopys service ..

Had a 3-9x50 Vari-X that was dropped on a concrete pad at the range , along with the rifle .. I had the scope for two years , my brother had it for at least three before that , and he got it from a guy who had it for a couple months ..

I sent it to Oregon , with a note telling what happened .. Told 'em to send a bill with the scope .. No kidding within ten days the scope came back , my only cost was whatever I paid in shipping to Oregon ..

The scope was completely rebuilt inside .. No Charge ..

FYI--
the last report come out from SCI on their testing of dangerous game scopes--just got the magazine today--it seems as though bascially all passed the recoil of the 60 shots from an unbraked 460 Weatherby--then they were mounted on a Remington 223 and tested for accurate tracking afterwards..

Worth the read--however they seemed to be a bit evasive in their reporting..

they tested this one and it held up just fine to 60 shots for an unbraked .460 Weatherby..in SCI current issue.
