I think the PH was lucky in it was a good brain shot. I have heard of many incidents where a lion hitting the man like that still has the energy to chomp on him a bit.
I understand there is a longer home video of the charge and hunt. Hopefully it gets released on a commercial film or free format as well.

This entire hunt was featured on the cable TV program "Dangerous Game," including the wounding of the lion by the client.

Whether the things mouth is open or not, getting run into by any large critter at 20 or 30 miles-per-hour has its hazards. Have seen this with horses, and had it happen to me and the results are unpleasant, sometimes for both the critter and the man/woman. Granted, a horse is bigger than a lion, but even so 300 lb "The Refrigerator" Perry never could keep up with a lion and nevertheless I wouldn't want to have been hit by him, much less a fullspeed lion.
The thing that strikes me as odd in the video is that the shooting stops immediately. I have been involved in a couple incidents with bear and insurance was paid on both. Does anybody know if the guy rolls over and sticks it again? The video ends before I'm sure what happened but it looks like that might have been where he was headed. Anyway, seems a bit odd.

Probably the PH was happy the clients weren't shooting when it was on top of him. I believe the other two men were clients.
Don't know if they did do an insurance shot though after(?)

I did not see an insurance shot on the television program -- lots of hand-shaking and back-slapping. I think someone does poke the lion to check it for signs of life. I looked at it last night but was not looking for that. I did notice they seems to accept that it was truly finished.

I watched that sequence again and all I see is a nudge from someone's foot, no insurance shot or other verification he is down for the count. Of course, you can't see everything in the video clip.

the PH was in serious trouble without a brain shot. the clients did not exactly look to be ready to lend a hand, to say the least!!! amazingly close call.
