Well, it should be here any day. This is the pic Ed from AHR sent me. He is testing it right now. Can't wait to put it through its paces

Looks extremely nice, and with that brake ought to be relatively tame.

Thanks guys, I'm really looking forward to getting this big guy up and running. BigDog---barrel length is 20" plus brake. It'll be interesting the difference in noise and recoil with & without the brake. I had Ed build it like SafariKid's with a shorter barrel and a weight that you can carry all day, around 10lbs. My 600 #1 weighs 10.5 lbs in full rig and is plenty manageable. Ed is testing it currently with a load of 155 grs H4350 and Woodleigh 900gr softs. I don't know what his speed is running out of this shorter barrel. I will keep it somewhat reasonable by running this bullet to around 2000-2200 fps. BigDog---what kind of loads have you run yours and what speed do you get? I think you have a longer barrel don't you?

My gun has a 26" barrel plus the brake. I have gotten 2330 ft/sec, but I will have to check the load, not at home right now. You should get about 1900 to 1950 ft/sec with the 155 grains of 4350 and a 20" bl. I believe my hot load so far at 2330 ft/sec was with 165 grains of 4350. I have some loaded with vihitouri N165 I think. I got about 2200 or 2220ft/sec with it. I will have to check when I get home.

Thanks Safari----Ed is finishing the sight regulation and test firing. He said the 155gr load of 4350 is doing 2100+ and is dead on at 80 yards for the sights so that looks just right. It should be here any day. I'll put up some pics and video when I have it up and running. Then it off to test on big pigs

Congratulations, that's a great looking rifle. Pardon my ignorance, but what is a 600 Overkill? What action is it on?

Look forward to seeing more photos and shooting reports.

Best wishes,

Chris

Thanks Chris,
The 600ok is a straight-walled wildcat round with a head size of the 505 Gibbs with a belt for headspacing on a 3" case. It's capable of taking a 900gr bullet up to 2400 fps if you wish to. I'm going to keep mine down around 2100-2200 as that's plenty and pressures are lower. This rifle is built by AHR (American Hunting Rifles) from Hamilton Montana on a CZ magnum mauser action which they then modify. This one has a forward scout-mount system in case I want to use a scout scope as well as the integral receiver mounts plus NEGS 2 blade express sights. They steel glass bed the entire stock channel as well as the double bolts.

That looks good with the short barrel. Is that an upgraded stock? How long was the wait to have it done?

I'm thinking that shorter 20' barrel should handle nicely in the field. Yes, I asked Ed @ AHR to send me pics of some above average wood and this one looked the best for strength and was not much more in price, I think around $200 more. Lead time was about 5 months.

Would you please explain your comment about 500 grains . His civil, and, I might add, gracious comment was "Looks extremely nice, and with that brake ought to be relatively tame".

What's your problem with that?

You're absolutely right about 500 Grains, and his experience. That's why I can't understand the rather, IMHO, blatant attack on him by fivebigbores, and on only his third posting here no less.

Mike-

I'm with you on this.
I can't imagine what's up this 5bb's craw, and the comment looks and reads curt and insolent.

fivebigbores,

500Grains did not say the 600 OK would be tame. He said..."and with that brake ought to be relatively tame."

Also, anyone with at least a partial brain would realise that "relatively tame" will be in the context of big bore powerful rifles.

Nice looking OverKill!

I get 2160fps with a Woodleigh soft over 160grs of H4350 with a 23" barrel. 2160 is a very shootable load, my rifle weighs 13lbs.

I can get 2300fps, but it takes a compressed load of 170grs of H4350. I can only get 170grs in a once fired case, in new brass the max load is 165.

How about if you, Fivebigbores, tell us more about yourself and your own experiences with bigbores, rather than questioning 500grains? Whom by the way most of us know has quite a lot of genuine experience with both bigbores (and big game hunting). Including .60 caliber bolt action rifles.

Again guys, thanks for your kind words on this project of mine. George, I too think around 2100-2200 to be plenty and in fact, a little fast for the Woodleighs SP's I will be useing. I have used these Woodleighs at 1950fps and the one below is from a lengthwise penetrating shot on a Spanish ram. It has pretty dramatic expansion back the the canulure although it still weighs 886grs. I will use a tougher bullet for truely big stuff. I had a great conversation with Ed @ AHR the other day on many topics. He is a fun person to talk to. Very knowledgeable with common sense. He is shipping this rifle this Monday so I should be testing it very soon and will let you all know how it goes. If I remember correctly, I think Ed put a Pac. Decelerator pad on it. One item Ed really likes, and I have never used but may try on this rifle, is the use of a scout scope. I makes a lot of sense for several reason so I think I will give it a try. If I don't like it, I'll go back the the receiver scope option. First off however, i'm going to spend some time with the iron sights.
As to where the wood came from. It is English walnut, but I don't know where Ed got it from.

That's an awesome round 600JDJ. Is that a 600 Nitro alongside?

I am having a 600 Nitro built on a (new) Farquharson action but I don't think i will be pushing those velocities! I can post some photos as it's built if anyone is interested.

Absolutely beautiful rifle and interseting round. Who makes the brass?

Best wishes,

Chris

Chris,
The round on the left is the 600JDJ from SSK. It is a 577 nitro case blown out to 620 caliber. The brass for both cases is Jamison International formerly Bell Mast. You'll have to post details and pics when available of your 600 Nitro. It sounds like a fun gun. What kind of loads are you going to run in your 600? I shoot mine a lot with cast bullets and have made a lot of different cast & jacketed mid and heavy loads for the 600's.
