Quebec Bear Hunt
      #81991 - 07/07/07 08:36 PM

I hunted the last week of the spring bear season in northern Quebec. This was a baited stand hunt and with such a hunt I only use a bow. On the first night a very nervous small bear came in and I elected to just watch him. On the second day I told the guide I wanted to video and he offered to film so he put a second stand nine feet above where I was positioned.

After being stormed on and sweating in the too hot early evening a large bear came to dinner. He had a full black coat and all of his hair was standing on end when he ran in. He was looking not only for food but a fight. He looked up at us briefly and then went to dinner. I decided I was going to take the bear. The video was running and as soon as the guide sends me a copy I will post it for you all to see. But here is my bear, a 245 pound boar on the scale, approximately seven years old.

And me with said bear

Ann, that's a nice bear. Looks like a nice coat on him. Did you atempt to utilize the meat also? I find that I can't even try to use the meat more than half the time. Only time they're really good is when they're feeding on berries and other fruits or just scarfing long grass.

Yes, I always try to use the meat, but this is the first bear I have killed that I could not eat. The meat smelled and tasted poorly even with marinade, it was awful, so my chickens are eating well. I think it was due to the hot weather and he had a lot of fat so he cooled too slowly over night.

Great looking bear-

Our boy was born late last month, just as I'd expected. He's perfectly healthy and has gained a couple of pounds since.

I'd have loved to join you in Quebec, I've scheduled a bear hunt in Northern California for mid september.
I have a bear tag, five bobcat tags, and a deer tag.
Wish me luck.
It looks like you did well and had fun.
