If you could only take one trophy in North Am....
      #8195 - 05/02/04 08:49 AM

Which would it be... what is the "Ultimate" trophy for the North American Hunter.

Results will be compiled and we'll havea poll vote for the winner.

and lets keep this non-specific to "size" outside of it being a full-grown adult male.

For me Grizzly or Elk.

That's what I would pay big money (when I win lotto) to come to North America to hunt for as the "ideal".

I am fortunate to have taken mine...a Desert Bighorn, but elk are always on my list.

A Big, White Polar Bear. By dogsled, with my 405 Winchester Model 95.

Second choice is a Full Curl, broomed Stone Sheep. I have tried to get a good one but no joy and I'm getting frustrated.

Grizzly.

Specifically, a Wyoming griz.

Don't laugh... it just may happen!

Later.

sure holmes, just keep telling yourself that.

for me, it would have to be something in the arctic... Bison, Caribou, or arctic wolf... although a monster Dall would be nice as well... I just don't get as excited about small sheep though... same with moose and elk, they gotta be big.

but those first three are really amazing species in any iteration.

There is nothing in the world that says North American like a big Mule Deer or whitetail deer.

All the bears , sheep, and even the elk could be mistaken for animals taken on other continents, but there is no mistaking the White tail or Mulie as being from anywhere but North America!

Actually, Wyoming is quite serious about de-listing the Grizzly due to population levels. And quotas are already being discussed behind closed doors.

Keepin' 'em crossed

I have been lucky enough to take most of the NA game I would care to. The ones that stand out though would be a nice big dall ram more due to the hunt then the actual trophy and my Kodiak bear, it took three trips to get a nice one worth shooting and it was pretty up close and personal not to mention a beautiful island.

The one trophy I desire other the African variety would be a polar bear. One of the few animals that when your hunting chances are he is hunting you back

I totally disagree DoubleD... likely because I see so many of the schmeared accross the roads around here that it really kills the "sport" of it for me.

their has to be some difficulty involved in obtaining the trophy, and I'm telling you. if you give me 10 days in november uninterupted with the necessary equipment, 9-out-of-10 times you will have a record-book deer. I can't say that for any of the sheep, Elk, Moose, or Bison.

Elk and moose are not too difficult to come by. Bison are like shooting Aunt Bessy's cow.

Big bears are mostly a matter of $$$.

How many of us have taken even one variety of N. American sheep??

If tough to come by is criteria, then Desert Bighorn is at the top. If you are one of the very lucky few to get the tag, you have a b.ll buster of a hunt ahead...same as with any sheep.

It is sheep, no question...

Elk and Moose are plentiful for sure, but the really BIG ones are quite rare... Elk especially are difficult to hunt (off-ranch) when there are trophy criteria. Moose, I can't say for sure, but one that is some 70-inches accross would be much nicer than any mulie.

as for Bison... I'm talking Bison from the NWT, true, wild Bison.

Did I miss something here?

I missed the part about having to put up sandbags and stack ammunition to defend your choice. I thought we where just going to take poll vote.

I picked the two North American small deer. I missed the part about it couldn't qualifiy if it was subject to road kill or could be farm raised

So I will choose again under the proper rules.... Vancouver Island Marmot!

I've taken Dall Sheep, but never a real bruiser. Still looking to break the 40" mark. There is just nothing like hunting the white sheep deep in the middle of nowhere Alaska. Unparalleled scenery, a hard and honest hunt, everything about the hunt is addictive.

I to have taken Dall sheep and I agree it is very challenging and the hunt is what makes it.

As was previously said being in the true NA wilderness hunting is the joy of it, paying for the trophy not in dollars which any fool could do but in the hunting it takes to get a nice Dall and the experience that goes along with it. Not to mention shooting one is only half the fun you now must recover it and get it back to camp and the latter can be much harder then finding one worth taking.

I've taken most of the North American game, though not all record book size!

My all time favorite is the large coastal Brown bear!He reminds me of a Volkswagen with fur. He is hard to hunt, and in the thick alders, can get your adrenaline pumping quick!

At night the thin nylon of a Eureka Wind River Tent is not real safety inspiring when you hear him Snuffing around the tent wall! He is top of the food chain, and he knows it! He is not easily intimidated, in the dark of night, when he finds your camp! He is very large, with the sow being larger than a full grown lower 48 Grizzley, and in close quarters, will give an African lion a run for his money in the generating excitement field! I agree with old TR, he should have been our symbol instead of what TR called a glorified buzzard, the Bald Eagle!

Ya know, the more I think about this I find myself considering a different animal.

Being a denizen of the Rockies, a true trophy class mule deer might just be my greatest wish.

Although they are now protected-- my choice would be a Jaguar. If it has to be currently on license a Kodiak Brown Bear.
