Well if you cant find any, you can just ship it to mine in North Carolina Good find!

I'm keeping the Mauser I have now in 8x57, but if I get another it will probably be bigger (or rebarreled bigger)

I have a shot out Springfield and a shot out 8x57 98 Mauser. I'll spring for a rebore to 35 Whalen on one or the other, but can't decide which. The Springfield would be the natural ('06 already), but I like the Mauser better.???

The complete rebore runs about $200.00 and doesn't require any re-bedding of a different barrel.

The VXII 2x7 is about the perfect scope on the Whalen! Are you going to put it in QD mounts? It would make a nice bushveldt gun in that configuration. It sure is nice to get rid of that scope when you enter thick bush after a wounded wildebeest or gemsbuck...they might have a go at you! It is point & shoot time...

Hey dasMafia, you could send it all the way to Kalifornia where I'll care for it. Did you catch Nickudu's Files which included the 35 Whelen in Cartridges Of The World section?

luv2... likely not QDs at this time, but only because (like I said earlier) I want it to be a twin to the 30-06 and everything to be interchangable on them, and mounting and zeroing a scope is pretty easy.... and I'll always have the tropical for back-up!

I've dropped like $2000 in the last month on firearms, so I've gotta trim my budget as much as possible for a while!

Only $2,000.00...? You'd better get going or you will be left far behind...

thats a HUGE chunk of budget when you're supposed to be a) remodelling the kitchen and bathroom, b) remodelling the basement, c)getting a better car, d) paying off the doctor's bills, and e) adopting an infant.

you can see my struggles!

AMMO IS HERE!!!

I have the following loads:

250gr Hornady RN 3.240" 52gr 4064 2300fps (15)
250gr Hornady RN 3.240" 54gr 4320 2400fps (10)
250gr Speer Grand Slam 3.265" 55gr 748 2300fps (15)
250gr Speer Spitzer 3.320" 54gr 4064 2400fps (5)
250gr Nosler Partition 3.340" 52gr 4320 2450fps (5)

all told, 50 rounds and about 25 empty cases

can't wait to get the gun back from the smith!

I'm quite curious about the GS and Partition for accuracy.

I forgot I had posted something here. Sorry about that. You can go to his Nickudu African Files and go to Man Magnum articles and then go to Cartridges of the World by Koos Barnard.

I've been using Speer GS in my 338 and my older 375 for years with excellent results all around.

For sheer accuracy, Sierra can't be beat...much too soft, though...

Try a bunch...every rifle is different...

I am under the impression that these loads were done just for this rifle... and as such, I am surely looking forward to seeing how they print.

I am expecting the best groups from the Speer... and either that or the partition will be the hunting bullet of choice...

While I do love the Partitions, I have found the Speers a bit better one shot killers in the Whalen, at its slower velocities.

Just my experience with the old 35. My first was with a re-barreled 03A3 in 1968; the next is with my present Remington 700 Classic. With its inherent faults, I have to say I do like the 700 in the Whalen, and used it on some plains game with great results. It so closely resembles the 9,3x62 and 9,3x74r that it is a fine medium bore up to big bears.

The big bruins require some smack that I feel is a bit lacking in the Whalen. The bigger brownie seems to have somewhat less of a highly developed nervous system and requires a "stopper" caliber sometimes. Many have been taken with a 270, however.

Have fun with that wonderful American Classic, now reborn.

I have a lot of shooting to do before I get too worried about a lot of this stuff, but in the meantime, I'll be quite sure to punch a LOT of paper.
