375Flg/375Belted/450-400 ---- Uncle Bill Died
      #81812 - 04/07/07 10:21 AM

Dear(Mythical) Old Uncle Bill died ---- he loved life, booze, rifles & hunting.

His only worldly possession were three DR's. All were made by the ABC Rifle Co. They are chambered in 375 Flanged(8lbs), 375 Belted(9lbs), and 450/400(9.5lbs). All are brand new, never been shot.

I'm the oldest of his 3 nephews, that means I get first pick!!!

I hunt mostly in the Western US & Alaska, have NOT been to Africa yet but will probably make a trip or two there in the next 3-5 years.

Which rifle should I choose? And why?

Thanks for playing along.

PS --- For all you 9.3x74 fans, Uncle Bill was NOT a metric fan..sorry

Toss a coin: heads for the .450/.400; tails for the .375 Flanged.

Poor old uncle Bill. My sympathies to you!

Assuming the three rifles are identical except for caliber and weight I would agree with Mickey - choose the .375 Flanged Magnum. It's more versatile in North America than the .450/.400, and it is adequate for Africa.

This all assumes your are a dedicated reloader. If not, you may consider the .375 Belted for availability of ammo. But in that event be prepared to take a lot of "chin music" from others on this forum who think the gazillions of DR's chambered in that fine round are virtually worthless because of rimless extraction and high pressure.

Easy

450/400

I thought everyone sees the 450/400 and 450 nitro as the 'ultimate' dg double round...or???

If I could have only one double it would be a 450/400.... Scoped of course.

375 flanged because the weight suits the caliber well and it would be a nice rifle to carry and shoot.

If it's the 3" case, I'd go with the 450-400. Plenty of power for everything in Africa and factory ammo available from a major manufacturer (if Hornady ever gets their s**t in gear).

Nothing wrong with the 3 1/4" version, but ammo is more problematic and that case can be a real pain to load, trust me on that.
