My "new" Mauser 30-06
      #81066 - 21/06/07 05:45 AM

As I'm not getting any younger and as I exemplify the old adage that it's not easy to teach an old dog new tricks, I recently decided to buy myself a rifle which would be scope only and to learn to use glass sights in preparation for the years to come. I bought this rifle from Brian Perazone, a New York gunsmith and member here and a fine gentleman. It will wear either a Leupold or a Kahles 2-7x scope. It is a very light rifle and the wood, in particular is very nice for the extreme budget price that I got it for.

Looks like a bargain. How is the trigger? A few bucks spent on a Timney or similar would be well-spent IMHO, especially when looking for scope accuracy.

...but then, what would I know about scopes? I too fear the day I can no longer see that front bead clearly!

BTW, I thought that day had already come when trying to make out the detail in your third photo!!

Well done. What do you hope to hunt with it first?

Marrakai,

Thanks for the acknowledgement of my age. Fortunately, my eyes aren't that bad yet. Just a lousy camera - I should have a new one soon with zoom and shall post a better picture. The floorplate looks like it was taken from some other rifle - Argentine? - with the tab in the trigger guard. That's what I wanted to show.

John,

Thanks for the good words, I am really happy with Brian's price and the gun itself. I am hoping to hunt some feral goats on a private property that is owned by a friend of mine in Texas. I'm not sure when I'll be able to do it though the winter would be a good time to get away from the Chicago cold.

Dan,

Thank you for the wishes.

Asif,

Yes, this is the one. Mark would be handloading some ammunition for me - the rifle is very light and should kick a bit with the heavier bullets from what Mark says. Hopefully, I'll start handloading soon myself for both my rifles.

Thank you, gentlemen, and very good hunting!

Mehul

Nice looking rifle. I am having built a similar spec rifle in 9.3x62 - and after much deliberation also decided to keep the barrel clean!

My thinking apart from the fact that my eyesight is also changing is that modern day scopes are pretty reliable and I am used to them anyway so why spend money on iron sights I am unlikely to use?

Good hunting with it and let us know how she shoots!

Regards

MLG,

Do post pictures of your rifle whenever you find time. Few threads are more interesting than those of a custom rifle being built.

I haven't shot my rifle so far - while I visited my business partner's private range a couple of weeks ago, I was escorting clients there and couldn't get any shooting at all.

Yes, scope technology is fantastic. I just like the old fashioned stuff, though. That's why I used the old dog and new tricks analogy.

Very good hunting with your new rifle and I'll look forward to the pics here!

Will do - about 3-4 weeks away from getting it hopefully!

Mehul:

Nice rifle!

Where did the action come from?

MLG,

Will look forward to the pictures. Congratulations in advance!

9ThreeXFifty7

I bought the rifle ready and fully assembled. The action is an old Spandau military one. Not sure but the floorplate looks like it was from something else as I have another MAuser with a military action as well and the release tab on that one is different.

Would appreciate any suggestions on what this might be.

Good hunting, gentlemen!
