Hey

I like using my big bore for deer and other mid sized game.

Does anyone else here use them for similar?

I like using my 450 Dakota on Elk and Mulies but it isint that good for the long stuff in the hills.

Still it gets a run in now and agin.

BigGuns

I have used my 375 H&H on roos and goats but not deer.

I used 220gr Taipan flatpoints soft points, which are bullets designed for the 375 Winchester.

I want to try them out on pigs next time I go pig hunting.

I almost bought a Siammese Mauser in 45/70 quite a few years ago. But unfortunately I didn't and I think from memory they were only around $100. Hindsight often hurts!

What type of deer are you hunting with your 45/70?

It isn't as popular in Australia as the US, but quite a few blokes that hunt sambar deer in the heavily forested Victorian Alps use it in Marlin lever actions. An ideal brush gun/cartridge combination.

Others use 375s, 400s, 450s etc. I prefer my 30-06 with 200 gr semi round nose projectiles as you have carry it up and down mountains all day.

Good Hunting

I hunt white tail.I use a single shot, the 1 shot 1 kill thing.I have 4 single shot rifles 2 rugers and 2 H&R's .The funny thing is the H&RS out shoot the rugers.Gibbs rifle co. makes a 4570 on a mark4 frame.I have been really looking at that bolt action 4570 what a idea.I will post the link for you.I would like to try those 600's one time sounds interesting. They were a black powder round (right)

I really admire the hunters that can use and do OK with single shots. To discipline oneself to put oneself in a position where a careful and selected shot is only taken, so a second shot is rarely required.

Personally I always prefer to have a backup available in the magazine just in case.

But I can see that if you could get used to it, the discipline would be invaluable.

I started off shooting with a single shot .22 rimfire bolt action with open sights. I used to get extremely close to the game and shoot well. I probably got more game then than I do now. A scope sighted centrefire makes a person lazy if you let it. I think in some ways you are on a good idea.

I have a Browning lever action in .308 Winchester. I love using it with the open sights, and also my .375 H&H with open sights as well.

Yes please post the 45/70 link. I assume it is a Siammese Mauser bolt action?

I also like single shots because they can wear a longer magnum barrel in a shorter rifle. eg a 264 Win Mag with 26 inch barrel. They are also can be very nice, sleek and light. Beautiful mountain rifles to carry all day.

....................................................

The .600 Nitro to my references was introduced as a cordite cartridge in 1899. Firing a 900 grain at 1850 to 2050 fps with 6840 to 8400 ft lbs of energy. Sounds like good whitetail medicine!

The 577 started off as a black powder cartridge about 1870 (577 BP Express) and its predecessors were the 577 Snider from 1866. Bullet weight for the 577 BPE was about 600 grains.

The 577 NE was the Black powder but loaded with cordite and drives a 750 gr bullet at about 2050 fps for energy of approx 7000 ft lbs.

Of course these were the little ones compared to the 8 and 4 bores of the period.

Yes the 25-06 is a very nice calibre as well. Good trajectory, little recoil, no nonsense.

I have a 6.5x55mm as well and really enjoy shooting it. Very similar to a 25-06.

Hey when you pull the trigger, you hardly know you have fired it

Its a interesting choice - should it be my 45/70 or my 25-06 today?
