You'll never answer this one...
      #80508 - 13/06/07 11:20 AM

...but at least I got you to read it!

Here's the question:

How many big bore doubles are made by any of the companies each year?

I'm hoping somebody knows a company rep or something and can give me some idea. I suspect the actual numbers of new-made heavy caliber double guns must be small indeed.

Any ideas?

Good question.

I doubt that you'll get a qualified/honest answer.... competition/trade secrets you know?

The number might be larger than you think..... there are a lot of us "with the habit and only one cure".

I suspect that if you e-mail guys like Russell Wilkin or Paul Roberts, they would happily tell you.

Better use the term "finished-up" rather than "made". Many components are still made by out-workers, and it can take more than a year to complete a gun. The number actually 'finished' in any one year is probably what you want.

I beleive Searcy makes 49 total rifles a year of all types.

Years ago I worked in a shop outside Detroit, MI where we sold some 4,000 guns per year, including pistols, rifles, shotguns and smokepoles. This was a large number for a small shop. So I kind of have a feeling for gun sales but the doubles are really hard for me to guess at.

I guess I can see some hundreds or even a couple thousand of the various 9.3x74R's being built for the European market, and add some for here in the USA, but the really big ones, .470, .500, etc must be low in production numbers. I mull over a HEYM .470 for instance, and it is hard for me to get a handle on even a hundred being made each year, but maybe I'm very wrong...

Don't know how many but I would bet it is a lot more than people think.

Not related to double rifles but you will get the idea

I live near and are friends with the Australian Hornady importer. When ever a new shipment of Hornadys arrive it never ceases to amaze me the huge number of 375 and 458 projectiles as well as odd balls like the 348. Where all the 375s and 458s are I have no idea but they obvioulsy out there. I bet double rifles would be a similar situation.

You could call Chris at Heym --I visited with him at the SCI show in Reno this year--seems like a nice guy--Also as mentioned above--Paul Roberts is very trustworthy and would be a good source of reference.

Talked with Chris @ Heymusa today..... he says that Heym produces about 50 DR's a year.

So the market is very small.

Not surprising when you think about it. For new/modern maufacturers (Searcy, Chapuis, Heym, Merkel), how many guys/gals have $5-15K to spend on a DR?

I know that Butch has made 7- 700 nitro doubles in the last 20 years. I would have thought that he made more than 49 in a year. But they do take alot of time to make.

Bigdog,

You have one of the 700's correct?

So now we need to find out who the other six "sick-os" are.

How many rounds do you have through it? Has it been blooded (other than your own)?

bigdog

The reason he only makes 49 is 50 is the cutoff for BATF regulations. I don't know the details but 50 or over is a big deal and causes all sorts of BATF intervention.

Mickey

Isn't it to do with being classed as "prototypes"
versus a full blown manufacturer ?
