Ruger No1, 450/400 any news?
      #80470 - 13/06/07 08:00 AM

Has any one heard when the 450/400 are to be available, its gone a bit quiet on this rifle, nothing on Ruger website.

Hopefully the "time to market" is faster than that for their Gold Label SxS shotgun....I think it was announced about 2002 and is just now becoming reasonably available. Of course the price has gone from $1800US to $2400US.

With the No. 1 it should not be as bad....lets hope.

The word I got last month was that they had a pile of them finished and waiting to be fired for proof and function.
The holdup: no ammo yet from Hornady.
That doesn't surprise me, with all the new cartridges Hornady has announced recently, plus the retooling to produce the "new-old" solids and softs, they must be running around like one-armed paper hangers.

Should not be a long wait as I think even with no ammo Ruger will still release them to market as Winchester released the 1895 when there was no .405WCF ammo avalable, hopefully this year.

I'm still trying to figure out why they did not opt for the .450 3 1/4" N.E., or the .470 for their new addition.
Don't get me wrong, I love the .450-400, but they need to start going "up" in caliber, instead of backtracking. There is a market for "bigger", but they don't seem to recognize it.

walksfar,

You are right Ruger should make a few more bigger "classic" calibres, I would like to see the following

.470NE
.303Brit
.375Flanged
.22 Savage Hi power

just for starters!

The Ruger 450/400 is now avalable! (at least in the USA) and I saw 5 for sale on gunbroker.com.

The Ruger website does not mention the rifle, I hope they come to oz sooner than later.

Yes be keen to see them here as production rifles, though a couple were produced as custom jobs:

I would LOVE Ruger to chamber a No 1 in .303!
I'd buy one in a heartbeat... it's getting harder and harder to find good gunsmiths as the 'old guard' retire and any remaining ones are booked up years in advance. Bob De Vries at Kudu Services apparently has SIXTEEN custom jobs waiting

Jack Millar also produced this rather elegant Ruger No 1 stalking rifle in .303:

Some of the guys on the AR forum have shot the new .450-400, and say that as the weight is closer to the 9.3X74 No. 1, the recoil is brisk. A couple of years back, some of us tried to rattle Ruger's cage about the .470. I sent a letter, and got a reply from Ruger saying they track written requests and go over the interest level at periodic product meetings to see if a particular chambering merits the costs of going into production.

My No 1 450-400 weighs 7.94 lbs.
Compare to the same model in 405 at 8.30 and a 45-70 at 7.31.

I expect the recoil WILL be brisk, still waiting on dies.

I suppose if you intend to scope the Ruger it will bring the weight up to 9.5 - 10 lbs. depending on the scope. That should dampen the recoil to comfortable levels.

8 lbs. is a bit light for use with open sights, although not in "the heat of battle."

G'day all, I had my #1 500NE out today for the first time. Having been fitted with the heavy .500 barrel it weighs in at just under 10lb. I was a bit short on loading data and started off with what is probably a pretty mild load of 90gr of ADI 2209 (=IMR 4350, W 760) pushing a Woodleigh 570gr RN/SN
I only loaded a dozen rounds for starters just to try it out. With the open sights and standing with just a a steadying side rest against a tree, I was grouping a little over 2" at 50 yards. Not being sure what to expect I started out with a shoulder pad in place, but after a couple of shots I was confident enough to rely on the recoil pad only. The only discomfort was from my middle finger copping a hiding from the trigger guard. I am off to work on the other side of Oz for the next couple of weeks, so I will start doing a bit more with the loads when I get home.

All the best and good shooting, Ian.

I agree. I would also like to see:

8x57IRS
7x65R
.30-40 Krag
.338 Winchester Magnum
9.3x65R Brenneke

All but the last in 1-S Medium Sporter configuration with 24" barrels. Yes, I know the .338 was formerly made in a 1-S, but I'd like to see it re-introduced. The 9.3x65R would need to be in the 1-H Tropical. I'd like to see your .303 Brit. in a 1-S also. But the .375 Flanged and the .470 would need to be 1-H

Watto, My 425 W/R eats the skin off the knuckle of my right hand middle finger. For range work, I take a 2" length of foam 3/4" or 1" pipe insulation and slip it over the agrieved knuckle. Works to perfection.

Let us know how it shoots and how the recoil is with the factory rubber pad. I have dies and brass but no bullets as yet from Hornady. Have some woodleigh solids but didn't want to use them for testing loads I'm waiting for some lesser expensive ones.

I have been shooting one for about a month now. It arrived from my dealer along with a Krieghoff DR in the same caliber, 450/400 3" regulated for the Hornady loads. My son and I are trading off and I got a good deal buying both together.

I do not find recoil excessive, firm, but not the 'wack' one gets with more high pressure loadings in the Ruger. The Kriege DR handles the round very nicely and is a very comfortable shooter. The regulation is spot on.

I phoned the Australian importers of Hornady and Norma and no one has any ammo but Norma may have some in next shipment in about a month, I was going to use the factory cases to reload I might have to get Bertram instead, How is Bertram brass these days? Some reports a few years were not to good.

I recently bought 100 rounds of Bertram .577 3" brass. They are of fine quality. No problems.

On the other hand, I used some Bertram in .280 flanged NE which were awful. Far too large in the head.

I have not tried their .450/.400 brass.

My wife gave me one of these terrific rifles for my birthday last week. It is very nicely finished and has a handsome though not particulary fancy stock. I immediately mounted a 2 1/2 power Leupold Ultralight scope on it and set out for the range. I was a bit leery of the recoil, never having played with elephant guns before, but found it to be a big friendly push from offhand, and nonexistent from a lead sled with 25# weight. Groups were a very pleasing 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inch at 100 yds. I couldn'nt be happier with this fine rifle.
