www.ttproctor.com - Rifle Maker - My Visit To England
      #80054 - 07/06/07 01:37 AM

I have just returned from England on Monday the 4th of June, venturing there

specifically to visit with R.M. Trevor Thomas Proctor - www.ttproctor.com - and was

I EVER SATISFIED!!! The conclusion that I have drawn is that any one, at any

price level, who wants a DOUBLE RIFLE is terribly shorting themselves if they do

NOT strongly factor in this maker. They are the best in the world period. As a

one man operator with 31 years to his credit making rifles, each newly finished

piece seems to surpass the one before it. He is driven to continue this way as

owners of his rifles are his number one advertising method. Not too long ago he

built a .375 H&H RIMLESS/BELTED Mag for himself, obviously completely confident

that IT would eject as consistantly as a flanged cartridge, which it does. I shot it,

it's simply PERFECT, that's all, perfect! Well as it was near completion, a man came

in and just would not take NO for an answer, insisting on buying the jem. Trevor was

"forced" to sell, again leaving himself with no D/R. This rifle now has been used

to take a male lion and bull elephant, etc. You know, when you're a 150 year old

company, you've customers from the royal family of England and you build very fine

guns and rifles you might just NOT feel that each and every subsequent rifle that

your firm produces needs to surpass the gun or rifle before. The multiple

workers who actually built the rifle don't have their own name engraved in the

banner on the side of the action body, nor are they financially invested in

the firm. Trevor Proctor is just the opposite of that. It's ALL about beating his

own last performance, his name IS the one you read on the action, he ALONE will

build you the best rifle that you can get on this Earth. He's had all good press

over the decades, and there have been royals from other nations that have chosen

him to be the maker of THEIR rifles. Any person would have the possession of a life

time if they can manage to acquire one. DR's start at twenty thousand pounds,

today that's quite near forty thousand U.S. dollars. But rest assured, as the

years go by you'll see it's resale value rise near the heavens. A thousand hours

of work plus engraving time, with skills like Trevor has, results in a treasure for

the ages. It will gain, gain and gain again in value.

Jack,

Sounds like you had a GREAT trip.

Proctor's rifles are beautiful and expensive, probably worth every penny.

I thought your plan was "under 10 lbs and under $20K"

Sounds like you might be considering... Plan B

No offense to Jack, but he changes his mind every few months. Today it is a Proctor gun, before that a screw-grip old Brit gun, before that, under a certain weight... than the four bores caught his eyes...then the .600 NE group buy idea....

Anyway, Jack, your gun is out there somewhere...

This is like order a Jet and having to wait until 2010 go get it.

Clark,

You are SO RIGHT. I am cracking up laughing at your post

and the absolute TRUTH of it! No kidding though, if a

person who can afford these numbers and wants new, looks

hard at Proctor's work, it's a done deal. The scalloped back,

best boxlock is off the chart!

Bonanza,

I feel a little stupid here but, I don't grasp your point.

Please enlighten me.

Delivery dates for new private jets are 2-5 years out. Ordering a new jet is like one of these fine rifles; it requires lots of patience, despite how much money you have.

If it is good, and I presume from everything I have heard, then the wait is well worth it. I have a Hoening Rotary Round action, another product of a master gunsmith and a true innovator. He too works alone and builds only a handful of guns each year. Since he is getting a bit older, and as his order book is also full for the next few years, I consider my gun to be not only a great shooter, but a work of art that can only appreciate. As with Mr. Proctor, when he is gone, the source will be as well. If I was in the market, I'd get in line now. Dave

Trevor is 62 now. There is no support staff.

You go to the shop you see him, period.

Thanks Bonanza

Each to his own. I've ordered my Holland Royal and I don't think for one moment that Pat in the gunroom would deliver my gun to me in 2 1/2 years time if he didn't think it was "the benchmark for double rifles" (quote in Terry Wieland Dangerous Game rifles). Before placing an order and doing all the research I spoke to an aquaintance who has been in the sporting firearms industry for most of his working life and indeed was managing director of Hollands before the Chanel takeover. When I narrowed my choices down he said, "Holland are no.1, then come Purdey and Westley Richards" He has no connection with the firm now. regards, Mike
