Curl,
I don't think that gun really has any assisted opening or "assistant" opening as it's spelled in the description.
I think they are looking at the "strange buttons" on the action flats and are assuming they provide assisted opening when, as we both know that is not the case, as they serve an entirely different purpose.
What do you think?

That 461 is a ripper - CCH and all.

Must check back as a minty one - maybe a target rifle
went for a huge amount not so long ago in either the UK
or here.

As I said before I would buy the Gibbs but my finances are engaged right now. That is a nice gun. It may be a tad high in price considering what it would take to bring it in to the country but not by much.

4seventy,

There you go with those "strange buttons" again!!!

Yeah, I saw them, but I still don't claim to understand them. Mine doesn't have them.

Yep.

The .461 in a Gibbs Rifle in good nic is quite rare
these days and tend to command high prices and from
what I have seen, higher than what they have it for.

Thanks nitro.

I like the cased Kavanagh a LOT,

But i also like the seemingly mint Manton......equal to the Grant but also nicer in design and condition....case hardening et al.

Hmm, how come these guns have a 'renovated' feel to them via the eye??? Is it just me or does something seem wrong??

The 20 bore is nice, and what is wrong with damascus? Get some more photos and bore measurements, then buy what YOU like. The Holland and the Gibbs are the items most likely to increase in value IMO.

Gatsby,hi..

Damascus is dangerous when pitted.

I have fear of exploding barrels, and value my face as is.....as does my fiancee!!!

Curl:
We had a thread on this a while back, at which time I didn't understand them either, but now I own a Scott sidelock fitted with mechanical cocking-rod retractors so I'm now 'enlightened'!
The small 'plungers' in the action flats are depressed into the flats by closing the barrels, whereby they engage angled surfaces on the cocking rods, thus withdrawing the cockers from their contact with the tumbler breasts. These devices persisted on Scott-made guns for some time prior to the realization that they were entirely unnecessary!

This pic should explain all:

Hope this helps.

Marraki
Thanks for the info. I have a Dominion 577 that has them and I always mumble thru an explanation when someone asks what those are for.

Yeah, the idea being to allow the tumbler to "fall" with maximum energy without it having to push the cocking lever/rod out of the way.
Also called Cocking Release Rods, Buttons or Plungers.

O/U shotguns and rifles often use light spring pressure to return the cocking rods to a forward position, totally clear of the tumblers, which achieves a similar result.

Marrakai,

Thanks for the information, mate! I have not had hands-on experience with a DR having the "strange buttons" so have been abjectly ignorant on the topic until now.
