H&H sidelock 500 bpe...price right?!
      #78915 - 19/05/07 06:20 AM

Hmmm........

Why such a price? sure i see its in good nick and has a great sidelock action, but surely that price is better used on a 450 nitro or an 8 bore double or something???

Opinions?? How can this price be right?

That's a nice rifle. $18k is in the ballpark, I would say, provided the condition is really good.

Hi curl,

But 18,000$ for a bpe.....uncased, since when?

Most i ever saw a bpe sell for is about 12,000$ fully cased H&H with all original accessories.

Because it's got sex appeal.

They are great looking rifle, great action (although probably not made by Holland), great condition, great name, supposedly mint bores. ???Is it an Ejector ???

The only thing that worries me is the rust on the rib.

I think you maybe need to get REALISTIC on prices

- I don't know many people who would sell it for that
at a minimum - seen heaps of guns like that is worse condition
go for less - including some Underlever Hammer 500BPE Holland.

And finally,
- BP gun prices have skyrocketed in the last few years
and they will continue to catch up with Nitro prices which will then go up again and the whole cycle continues.

I agree with the Cap on his evaluation of price. Assuming that the rust was not there, 18 is the correct price in the current market. Dave

If the rust wasn't there, maybe slightly closer to 20.

In 2 - 4 years time (at the most),
that will be a $22 - 24,000 gun,
especially if someone put the correct case
with it and a few nice shiny accessories.

I think BPE DR's of good make, good condition are
increasing in value at 10 - 25% a year at the moment
- and have been for some time.

Its a Holland, 5 dram gun, hammerless, engraved, 18k is in the ballpark, anyway. You could have bought a Holland paradox, cased, best gun just sold in the same price range. A Holland 8 bore hammerless sold not long ago for more than 40k an all original gun cased with provenance. A Holland 8 bore paradox hammergun sold for 32k. A Holland 500/450 nitro sold about a year ago for close to 50k original, cased with provenance Hope this is some help.

Hmmm

Thanks for the help, but even if it is a good one, i would want to see it face to face and then the others which seem to go for less, cased. I work in realty, and have always worked in sales....yep the dreaded salesman.(albeit an honest one thankyou) In that time it seems that sometimes people, including myself, become drawn to a high price on something convinced it must mean it is better.

I'll go with you professionals on that price.......but would you call it a bargain then?

I noticed the nasty price rise!

I notice that sidelocks and boxlocks in bpe's increase the value on a no-name brand as much as having a great name. Or am i wrong?

Calibre also seems to change the price somewhat.

If you could choose from these, which would you choose; a sidelock 450 bpe in good condition but some bore pitting for about $2000, a boxlock 577 bpe better condition, but some bore pits about $6000, or a typical hammer Jones underlever bpe rifle in average slightly pitted condition, about $4000?

Which and why? Lets say they are all the same make to keep things simple.

Thanks

Ben

I think the best BPE chamber is .500 3".

H&H had a penchant for the .500 3.25" That's what we see here.

Big deal. Make your brass from .470NE.

The price on the one you are buying is always higher than the price on the one you are selling.

Thanks guys

What about the top nick Grant boxlock on the thread i posted 'who is this?'

Nice eh?

I shall aim to go hammerless on my bpe. Hammer is nice in its own way, but i do prefer the sleek lines of the hammerless.

boxlock vs sidelock.......in a double whats better?

Ben
