Not a bad price or starting price for the gun.

Might be a hell of a gun, but that seller is sure no photographer. Can't tell a thing.

The gun is certainly worth that!!

The stock looks like it has dipped in Zip Strip, hosed off, and finished with no stain at all.

Wonder what else?

I agree that as a photographer, I hope he didn't give up his day job! 12K for what (from I can tell from the crap photos) is a bit aggressive for a tired, 'ridden hard and put away wet' Jeffery. Is it really an 'ex Elmer Keith' gun? Who knows and, to be blunt, would I buy a gun that no doubt shoots and functions as well as this poorly-maintained example no doubt will? Not me.

I'm not knocking guns with a 'history.' I am a Sharps collector and guns that can be traced through factory records and other available sources to such events as the original Creedmoor match guns (and several of those survive in near mint condition) etc will bring a substantial boost in inherent value. But Elmer Keith was a gun writer, albeit a very enjoyable one and a fascinating character that we are poorer for his loss. However, he went through many, many guns in his lifetime, often getting one to use from a friend for a specific hunt and then discarding or loaning to another. I have seen a few of his handguns for sale, ones that were built or modified to his specs and which have brought a big price because of their unique nature as well as their connection to Elmer. All were marvelously maintained by someone who took care of his guns. This one? As Roscoe points out, ridden hard, put away wet, and appears to have been redone in an outhouse by someone quaffing a few brews.

Whew! I thought I needed knew glasses, glad to know it wasnt just me .... seems to me if you want 12K + for a rifle it may be worth taking photos that show what it is you are buying,,,,I would be ashamed to post those pics (if I knew how to post pics that is lol)

I agree.

Hell, if I ever sell guns which I occasionally do), I make sure that all the detail is in the photos - of everything - so the buyer can see everythig.

After all, it's hard enough buying a gun from the other side of the country let alone the world.

He could have done better.

IMHO, someone who doesn't post good photos is trying to hide something in most cases
- and I just had a phone call from someone which confirms it - person buying a DR, photos sent / posted, all looked good, person travelled over with gun, when he looked at the gun some modifcations had been done to the muzzle !
- he didn't buy the gun but when he checked the photos, the muzzle had been left out of all of them !!!

John

Good pick up but I think it is an optical illusion.

A lever locked forened is used so it would be hard to shorten it without having the lever sticking out of the end.

Yes, but in the other photo it doesn't look stubby,
in fact it looks very normal.

I just cross checked it with my .333 Jeff which
is an identical gun.

You think that $12,000 is high! Here is a clip from an email I recieved from him in regards to the gun.

"I have had the Jeffery appraised on its own withought the Keith documentation sight unseen for $25,000 to 30,000."

I think he's in for a rude awakening.

$25 to $30k

And then he obviously thinks the Elmer Keith link adds more value.

Quite optimistic!

The old "friend of a friend of a friend" stuff. Unless there is a receipt for the purchase identifying that rifle by serial number and signed by Elmer, or some paperwork from the manufacturer proving it was originally sold to Elmer, there is really no way to verify Keith owned it at all.

Even if this was Elmer's, the seller needs to patent what he is smoking. Read on another forum that this gun had been restocked. If so, there is no way in hell it is worth anything close to $25 K (which is apparently the reserve).

And who knows what the bores are like, or whether it is still on face or even shoots to regulation.

It doesn't matter if it was owned by Elmer Kieth or Kieth Richards, it is not worth anywhere near $25000.

But what the heck, it his rifle and maybe he doesn't really care if he sells it.

The minimum bid is listed as $12,000.

Not sure where the $25,000 appears ???

Edited: OK I see the post above

However it HAS been listed with a minimum price of $12,000. Doesn't that mean he has to accept $12,000 if it is offered?

The reserve is the "hidden" sale price you must reach to win the rifle.

The opening bid is just to judge interest.

I Doubt the fellow is stuck on $25,000 and betcha he would take alot less.If the reserve is $25k he is probably out of luck.

I am surprised that he would put the gun at auction and not on GA or other gun sites.Sounds like he wants money and to turn the rifle fairly quickly.

I would encourage anyone really interested to contact him, research the gun and make him an offer. You may get surprised.

I have read this with great interest......

Are we getting another hike in double prices?

If you think thats high what is this; http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=71906963 ???

I love bpe's but i would never imagine paying as much or more for one compared to a nitro.

Yes we are, very much so, more on BPE's than Nitro's

Judging from the number of PM's I get,
The level of interest is continuing to go up
and the supply of good, known, working guns
from the old days is going down.

Demand - Supply - increase in price !!!

Ah how the tide turns!!!

bpe's were the last line of affordable quality doubles!!!

Hope Baikal and the other fools get a move on with making some kind of doubles, apart from the very cheap tacky one they offered.

Why not a quality offering in 450 nitro etc etc? Priced at a fair figure and with less fancy finishing than you get with Chapuis and such, say what $6,000???

Just a thought.

Ben

Some things truly never change.

I always admired quality Doubles when younger with limited $$ on the hip and didn't fully understand their specialty uses but thought the prices outrageous.

Now that I am older and truly would enjoy having a quality gun they are all being made of UNOBTAIN-I-UM.

Oh well, its all prices and timing--supply and demand does that--and my Merkel still shoots great so life is good!!

Mickey-if it was owned by Keith Richards, one might have to consider what "powder residue" remained in the barrels. Give new meaning to the phrase "smokin' double"!
