Old style tie on rifle slings?
      #78807 - 17/05/07 07:32 PM

Has anyone used the tie on thong type rifle sling or fish hook set up as used on old English rifles wiyh large sling studs and are they trustworthy to hold your valued rifle?
Regards,
Adam

Adam

Here is the tie on type on my Jeffery 404. It is quite secure but needs to be looked at occasionally as they can wear a bit. the thong is easily replaced.

The advantages over metal are quietness as they cannot bang or click the barrel. They also will not mar the blacking as metal can.

If it gets wet it can shrink tight and be a bit harder to remove.

I also have the hooks on a 2 inch sling for my Doubles. it is easy on and off but can be noisy.

I'm looking for a classic tie on sling for my double - are they safe..?

By the looks of it the thong could slip out of the ends? Or are they as durable as other slings?

How are the rawhide best maintained?

How is the knot best tied so not to come undone while hunting?
Any pictures of good knots? I see Mickey have a picture of the knot, and I reckon I figured out how the thong is tied, but a loose knot would be nice.

I would imagine any good fishing line to hook knot would work fine But I'm a bit dubious to relying on the strength of leather thong. Leather can rot and loose its strength easily.
The leather sling with the fold to accept leather thong should easily work with some Spectra cord though.
