Have any of you eaten steamed fiddle heads before?

I have eaten them once but they were par boiled.... so they were cooked but not mushy.

I recall hearing about them when I was a youngster in Highschool, the outdoor education course ( which I was not permitted to take... long story) held camping weekends whereby they had to sustain themselves on wild vegitation and game (mostly fish) for the excursion. Friends of mine told me of them upon their return to school... it wasnt untill years after when i tried them... my wife brought them home, if memory serves,I recall they tasted like a mild broccoli or was it cauliflower. whatever the case they didnt do much for me either way.

I have lots of these ferns growing on my new property. I personally do not like most vegetables cooked so I probably will by pass these. They do look pretty cool and I see advertisements from vendors for Boston restaurants looking to buy them.

Fiddleheads grow wild up here. The most common recipe I've seen is steamed/blanched with salad oil or vinegrette dressing. Never really cared for them in any type of recipe myself.

Very common in many Korean dishes though.

A "fiddlehead" sits on top of a "fiddlestick"? (I have no idea of what a fiddlehead is, a mushroom?

John,

They are the new leaves of ferns. They are curled up and look like a fiddle head! A lot of people like to eat them. I will see about getting a photograph for you to illustrate.
