10 Bore fully rifled DR

Hi Folks.

Speaking with George Caswell here the other day about me getting a DR I have always been found(i my mind) with H&H`s .465 cal which Champlin Firearms has.....however I also found this one:

How powerfull is the 10 bore DR?? Can this one be loaded with Light smokeless loads?? is there anyone still makes up 10 gauge brass? Bullets molds etc?? Which reloadingpress can take 10 gauge dies?? Special casetrimmers also..??

I natually suspect this 10 bore DR that Champlin Firearms has some good strong barrels(steel)compared to damascus barrels??

Should I go ahead and order the like the .465H&H instead which all things are available to as a beginner(much easier perhaps)...IF like this 10 bore doesn`t regulate both barrels, are there some great problems ahead for getting such a gun to hit well????

Yep..I am a newbie to all this, so I will rely on the many more experienced people in here.

Probably Nitro for Black / Light Nitro

"is there anyone still makes up 10 gauge brass ?"
10 Gauge Shotgun Shells are available
10 Gauge Brass - not sure

Bore guns are easy to get to shoot.

Barrels are almost always thick and strong.

Price is good.

yes...I think too a big gaugerifle could be very funny...

I have a .416 Rigby already..and don`t believe a .465 H&H will bring more "magic" then so...

In Gun Digest 1996 there is an artical about the .775cal Rigby(10 bore).

I still prefer that nitro one at empiregunsight but the price is horrendous......

Beautiful anyway..........

How does a 12 bore rifle compare???

Nice rifle and not a bad price either. These are
powerful beyone your wildest dreams when loaded up to
the original level.
Brass cases are available in the US. Mine have lasted
8 loads each and still going.
Light smokeless loads are available, but may not
regulate very well in this rifle. I tried a few in mine
and never was able to get it to shoot as well as black
powder. This one is a 3 1/4" chamber, so it's probably
regulated for 8 drams or maybe more. Recoil should be
quite impressive.
You do not need a press or dies to reload this case.
Just hand load on the bench.
Bullet moulds are easily found once you know the
actual groove size. Round ball or short conicals.
This would be a great driven Boar rifle in Europe.

Thanks guys.......

I have now since started this thread looked in different books about the 10 bore rifle. When it started its carrier it was a rather puny caliber...900 Ft/sec with a round ball....Boddington in his book states about 1550 Ft/sec with a 845 grain bullet which isn`t so bad!!. Burrard in his book states the same in Notes on sporting rifles (1920).
I really don`t need a doublerifle, but always thought it could be funny to shoot them so why not get all the fun out it and get a really bigbore..haha

I believe I`LL call George tomorrow and talk some more about that particular 10 bore...

How much is a dram of powder approx??

Yep she is a honey.....

Remember you can go on up for a bit yet, there is the 8 bore and the 4 bore too!

I would never go over an 8, too much gun.....

10's and 12's make more sense....

Still need to have ammo made!

Think i'll stay humble with the 450/500/577 bpe express rounds.......easier on the cases at least.

A dram is about 27.5gr.The rifle at Champlins is at least an 8 dram gun by weight. An extremely powerful weapon in deed. Brass is available but you need to know if it is a paper case gun or thin wall brass.

re: your question as to how 12 bore rifles relate to 10s. You need to get your hands on the Double Gun Journel volume 13 issue 3 for Frank Findlow's excellent article Some Thoughts on 12 Bore Rifles. A small article packed with information and charts comparing 12 bores to other guns of their times and modern cartridges. The 12's were loaded with from 3 to 9 drams of blackpowder. One collector here in the US has a Holland 12 bore rifle that was factory regulated with 12 drams of blackpowder!

If i am very lucky i may come upon a 12b rifle........

Know where there is a nice one for about $8,000 but thats too much for me.

Have heard of a 12b Tolley though, might be ok we shall see,wish me luck!!!

4 bore-12 drams BP- 1882 grain bullet- velocity 1300Ft/sec-7400Ft/Ibs
8 bore-10 drams BP- 1257 grain bullet- velocity 1500Ft/sec-6290Ft/Ibs
10 bore- 8 drams BP- 875 grain bullet- velocity 1550Ft/sec-4660Ft/Ibs
12 bore- 7 drams BP- 750 grain bullet- velocity 1550Ft/sec-4000Ft/Ibs

I guess these old guys have never heard of fancy BC`s of ballistics...

If one should load smokeless in these gaugerifle cartridges..should it be shotgun powders...or fastburning riflepowder??.

I wonder if a "little gardenload" could be done in the 10 gauge with a simple round ball??

Could the 10 bore be loaded with two roundballs in each hull??(multipurpose load..hahaha)

If/when I get to reload this 10bore "thing" should I preferre shotgun primers or rifle primers
a la Fed 215 and such??.
