Best Elephant Solid Bullet Ever??
      #78118 - 06/05/07 11:09 PM

If we theorize that the rifle is just the launching pad for the bullet then questions arise on Ele solids.

Present conventional round nose solids can be hard on barrels and may be out penetrated by flatnose designs.

Assuming equal accuracy are flat nose solids a better choice? Maybe so--

The flat top banded solids are great and North Forks cupped solid may be the best of the best.Too bad neither North Fork or GS bullets make a 600 gr .510 diameter cupped solid bullet(SD-330).Personally,I think that may be the ultimate solid for DG in a portable rifle. An Ele solid par excellence!!

Are there better solids for big bores out there?? Who makes them?

John Taylor says it was Rigby's steel jacketed solid. He'd probably shot thousands of elephants, some legal, some not, so may have had an idea on whose solids were best.
: Today, I'd guess at the homogonous solids as being better yet, if possible, as John said he'd never seen a Rigby solid deform in any way.
: On elephant, I suspect one only needs to penetrate straight and through the brain, so greater than this depth isn't nearly as important as straight-line penetration. Which nose shape and consruction gaurantees straight line penetraion becomes the 'best'.

You are correct.

With solids we need--
1) Accuracy
2) Straight line penetration
3) No deformation, no weight loss
4) No damage to barrels
5) Adequate velocity

Have I missed anything??

Whats wrong with Speers Solids 500 gr. I just bought a box haven't shot any yet.
They seem stream line.

Gentlemen,
Lets not forget what rifles you want to use these solids in. If you use these "modern solids' in your old English doubles you run the risk of the rifling appearing on the outside of the barrels. Therefore always measure bore diameter before using. They are not very forgiving!
Best solid in my mind, for classic English doubles is the Woodleigh range, they are the right shape, construction, and are very accurate. I will be able to report on deformation when I return frm Zim. in July
Also dont forget to load them back a little, due to increased pressure.

Woodleighs are certainly the standard but better penetrating bullets may be out there.

If the banded solids work they should theoretically develop less pressure secondary to less surface area bullet contact. The flat nose may promote better penetration.

Time will tell whether such bullets are a better mousetrap.

I'm not too sure what the best solid bullet is, but I do know that the Woodleigh Solids at a muzzle velocity between 2000 and 2450fps are bloody great.
Used a few on Hippo, Lion, Cape Buffalo and Elephant with good results.
IMO, the important factor is to keep the velocity down.

I'll second (or third) that.

I have used Woodleigh Solids on elephant in my 450 No2, my 450/400 3 1/4" and my 9,3x74R with excellent results...

However the North Fork 450 gr Flat Point in my 450 No2 did give quite a bit more penetration.
They just may be the best present day Solid.

I am presently shooting Woodleigh solids in my Merkel and the gun groups shoots great. I am sorely tempted to try some GS flat point banded solids and see if I have a better penetrating bullet.

Next time I reload some of the GS 570 gr solid bullets certainly need to be tried.

I'll be using Woodleigh Solids in my 416 Rigby next year when I hunt Cape Buffalo in Namibia. My PH, Vaughan Fulton says they're excellent.
