9.3X74r info??

Hi Guys,
I just purchased a 9.3 double and was wondering if there was any reference material, books or other info available about the 9.3x74r? I am interested in the history of the cartridge, any info regarding it's use thru the years, and why it's regaining popularity today. I appreciate all or any info you may come up with.

It's undergoing a recent surge in popularity because Ruger is chambering it in the No 1 and Hornady is making ammo, brass and dies.
It's a fine old cartridge suitable for anything one would take with the 35 Whelen.

Thanks for the info. I tried to order some Hornady ammo in 9.3 and every place I contacted told me the ammo was on back order. I was told by a guy at Buffalo Arms that Hornady and S&B were made by the same company with different named boxes on it. Does that sound right? He said S&B and Hornady have the 9.3 made at the same place, or something like that. I've never heard of that but who am I to question. I thought Hornady had it's own factory for ammo. What do you guys think?

"Cartridges of the World" has a small write up on a lot of cartridges incluing the 9.3x74R. A good reference book to have on hand.

From what i could find out about it, it comes from germany, and dates back to about 1904.

My father has one and its a good low pressure cartridge, with manageable recoil.

Its still very popular in europe since its an appropriate caliber for large deer and has everything going for it for use in a double rifles.

Its funny because there isn't huge selections of game cartridge popularity in europe, not what you see in the states, but the ones that are popular, have been so for a long time, and seem to be almost oblivious to what people use in the states. Its a similar story with RWS magnum cartridge 8x68S. Popular in germany, but almost unheard of in australia, and more than likely not popular in the states.

The only comment i have on the 9.3 is that you are going to have to reload yourself. Ammo is very expensive (on what i could find in australia, prices are about $AUS7 a round, or around $150 a box of 20) and brass isn't cheap either, but you save a fair bit of money in the process.

I have 9.3x74 ammo by Norma and RWS. Hornady is in short supply but is not made by Sellier & Bellot that I am aware of. For reloading I prefer RWS brass but find Norma easier to find. Have not been able to obtain any Hornady brass as yet or loaded ammo. I would have no hesitation taking ANY game on earth with the 9.3x74r. I have owned 9.3's by Chapuis,Valmet,Ruger and think it is probably my favorite of all all round calibers. I like it so much that's my license plate number.

Cabelas shows the 9.3x74R Norma in stock. That is what I have used. Nosler shows some of their ammunition available as well. Midway carries it or Nosler has it available on their website.

I do not know if any of these match your rifle's regulation load or are acceptable for use in your rifle.

I also prefer RWS brass. Its very high quality.

I have seen very high quality brass from Norma,
but whether their brass is better than RWS I don't know.

Zim: I assume you use your 9.3 for hunting there in AZ as well as elsewhere? Deer, elk there?

What are your favorite bullets?

I do not own a x74R but "as my name implies" my x57 runs a 285 grain bullet out at 2100 fps and is one of my favorite calibers. As you say, the 9.3 caliber is easy to get bitten by! Anyway, my x57 speeds appear just a smidge below many x74R velocities I've seen posted which is another question really, as it seems published factory velocities for the x74R cartridge hover around 2300 fps for 285/286 grain bullets, with cited chrono'd velocities I've seen in various places actually running closer to 2150 to 2250.

What is your experience in this regard?

Actually the only thing I have shot in he US with the 9.3 is ground squirrels and it is very efficient on them. I have carried to Africa but have not actually used it there, for some reason I just have always used another rifle. I used the Valmet SHOTGUN barrels quite a bit there for birds. I have mostly used either Woodleigh or Nosler Partitions and found both to shoot very well in all the guns I have had.

This caliber keeps on being very popular in Europe. All gunmakers offer it on their doubles.
There have never been so many doubles here as today, because some brands have become affordable and they excel in some situation such as the big drives called montarias in Portugal and Spain. Owing to the very dense mediterranian bush the only way to hunt (mostly wildboar and red deer) consists in encircling large areas (up to several hundred acres) with posted hunters (20-40 aver. but sometimes 60 or even more) a releasing several packs of specialized dogs, literaly hundreds of them. You can't imagine the frenzy sometimes! It is no my favourite type of hunt but it surely has its charm.
Shots are usualy at short to very short range, with fast moving targets, through dense bush and more than often a quick second shot can make the difference. A double in a medium speed caliber with heavy bullets is the right choice.
The 9,3x74R has always been popular, with the 8x57JRS as a second option but far less common. Some years ago Blaser released its .30R for the same type of guns and for a while many predicted that it would be domesday for the venerable 9,3 but they were wrong.
I'm the happy owner of this old and lovely CCS 25 with which I share many memories.

My load:
CCI 250; 56 grains of Tubal 3000; 285 grains Teilmantel RWS, without crimmping for avr. 2320 f/s

Taylor has favorable comments on the 9.3X74R in his book and terms it the German response to the 400/350 and 400/360,both of which he considered fine cartridges.

I bought the last 3 boxes of Norma 9.3 x 74R at Dallas' Cabelas a couple of weeks ago.

$52/box, but they had a $30 less for those who shop for more than 150 dollars, so they came out pretty cheap.

I've got a chapuis 9.3X74R. I just ordered some brass and bullets to reload first batch. I shot a case of factory loads to compare to my reloads. I love the thing and have shot several feral hogs with it already. It's light weight, has tolerable recoil, and really has the power to take anything up to cape buffalo (in my opinion. It has taken several ele's in its history). Someone mentioned earlier that it was analgous to the 35 whelen. I'm going to have to dispute this. I have both a 35 whelen and the 9.3 and find the 9.3 substantially more powerful. My factory loads shot 286 grain bullets at 2400 fps. The Whelen, at least in my experience, doesn't quite have the kick the 366 does. 35 Whelen's generally aren't loaded with anyhting heavier than 250 graines, and one can easily reload a 9.3 with ~310 grain bullets at roughly 2300 fps. This is not to knock the 35 Whelen, as it is my personal favorite cartridge.
