12 ga Paradox
      #77898 - 03/05/07 07:06 AM

Having just acquired a very nice looking 12ga Paradox, I was wondering if anyone has had any luck shooting reduced loads in these beasts. A friend who has one, and acquired some 'full boat' Paradox loads that 'cleaned out his sinus, good and proper.'

Since I am going to shoot this pristine relic of a bygone era only for giggles, and not use it on anything more aggressive than a piece of steel, any sources for loads?

Dave

I don't think you need dread shooting your paradox. Normal loads should be just under mildly stimulating. When was your paradox made and what is the chamber length? Early guns regulate at about 1000fps to 1050fps. Later nitro guns at 1100+. If you were lucky enough to aquire one of the few magnum guns velocities were somewhat higher and the gun was probably originally regulated with a capped bullet. Try a 740gr. bullet with about 20gr of unique and buy Wrights book. Congratulations, you won't regret you new acquisition.

Thanks. I recall the chambers were 2 1/2" but I need to check the proofs tonight to see whether it is nitro and the load markings. I will take a look at the Doubles book for loads. And, re your signature line, I have never had a tiger on the head of my elephant, but I have had an angry federal judge on my back. All things considered, I'd rather deal with the tiger. Dave

The only time the 12's become heavier recoiling rifles, is with the heavy BP loads of the late 1880's and 1890's. 151gr. 1F with a 480gr. or heavier ball or bullet will start to kick in an 8 pound, gun and 190grs. lifts the muzzles quite smartly.
: With smokeless loads duplicating these heavier BP ballistics, the recoil is very much lighter and no more than the old heavy duck loads with 1-1/2oz. lead shot - less recoil than about any 3" load.

I suspect you are correct. My Cogswell was built in 1909 and is nitro proofed. I have a friend who loads for his slightly later gun and he and I are going to go out and pot some steel pigs at his place this weekend. He seems to have no recoil issues and it may be that this is simply one of those urban legends that crop up in our hobby from time to time. Thanks for the input. Dave

Congratulations on your 12 bore paradox double! I've been looking for a 16 bore fully rifled double for years, that is in good enough shape to hunt with, but haven't found one yet, at least one I could afford! I have a Pedersoli double rifle I've been thinking of re-boreing to 16 bore, and rifleing, if I can find someone to do the work. The barrels are very heavy on this rifle, and There will be pleanty of wall thickness for 16 bore, but not 12 bore.

I don't have any load data for you, sorry, but there will be pleanty here for you.

Dnovo,
I had assumed your gun was a Holland. Is your Cogswell a Fosbery style rifled choke gun? What is the weight?

The Cogswell trade name for the Fosbery style paradox guns (I believe Paradox was the H&H name) was "Cosmos" My gun is a full coverage very nicely engraved, case colored action, POW semi-pistol grip, full swamp rib with three leafs and bead front,DT ejector gun. 7 lbs, 4 0z. Essentially mint condition and very little used. Dave

Sounds like the gun that was at Safari Outfitters, if so, beautiful gun.
