I've seen some high fence places offer Muntjac recently. This is a collector species and not free range in the US. It is also one I would personally love to collect due to its very unique look.

However, is it worth $750 in the snow in a high fence northern US forest? I am quite sure the vendor imports these animals from Texas, etc.

Not that I am calling it a hunt, just looking for "your" ruminations on such a beast. What if you desired Pere David Deer, Chinese water deer, Scimitar Orxy, etc?

For me it would likely depend on the condition of the fenced land.
I think it would have to be a fairly large fenced area for me to feel comfortable with it.

I am not a trophy hunter though, and at this point in my life I think I'd much rather travel to whatever wilderness a beast lived in to hunt than to go to a controlled plantation to kill one.

I have to agree with Tinker on that one. But I'm not a trophy hunter either.

I'm not sure I would be comfortable in a fenced hunt at all. Maybe if the area is large enough. I dunno. Never have done it. Mostly just hunt these eastern U.S. woods and the public lands of Colorado.

Guys,

I guess for certain species I am only a collector. Funny thing I know but then for other animals I am a serious hunter for, others yet serious for meat and thus prefer females.

I have never heard of a "preserve" with a large fenced area for something like Muntjac.

Ann,
It depends on the preserve. There are 100 arce preserves which are far from a hunting experience and there are 600-1100 acre preserves in the Noertheastern U.S. These I feel offer a reasonable duplication of a hunting experience.
It is sometimes the only hunting available to us and if reaserched and done properly you might enjoy it.
I myself think they are great and a worthwhile experience
when time, money and species are not readily available.
Just my humble opinion.

Ann,
The Wild Hill Preserve is in Vermont. I hunted for a Black Buck hard for three days and finally saw it on the last day. I also never saw the same property twice in three days while hunting.
Whispering Hollows is on the Pa Md border not as big but just as fun. The owners are nicer, the accomadations better
(separate accomadations for a woman hunter) they will accomadate any special requests. I've been to both places more than once and like them a lot.

Ann,
How big is the High Fenced area?
If it is 1000 acres or more and has good cover, and you hunt on foot, then I say go for it.

I hunted a cow eland in Texas with the DRSS under high fence. We hunted on foot. It was not a sure deal, and we worked hard, had great fun, and got a good trophy and great meat.


Many years ago my brother and 2 friends hunted Mouflon Rams on a large place in Uvalde TX.

It too was a hard hunt, we had great fun.

It is all about the fun.

What about South Africa.It is all fenced but the area is so large that you have to walk and trek quite often.I think in such a situation it is all right to hunt,but then this my view, others may differ.

If it was a fair chase hunt and I was not able (absolutely not able) to hunt them in their native range, I'd consider it, I guess. I'm not much of an animal collector though. If the hunt seems like it would be a worthy experience, sure.

gryphon is right and it is rather cheap, i got a friend going over there once a year and it is a blast. only thing is that it is hard to get your guns to england so rent in stead, i will see if i can get some prices and contacts for you.

Ann,

I don't know if I'm here late but I do know of a property in Texas that is owned by an Indian with blackbuck on it. The owner was my senior in high school a long time ago and we were recently re-introduced by a former classmate of mine who was a hunting buddy back in India. I am planning to hunt on the property later this year and if you would like to have any information, I would be mroe than happy to put you in touch with my friend. He is a keen hunter and though he's becoming eccentric as he gets older (he prefers bowhunting these days ) he is sure to be able to suggest a few places where he has personal experience from.
