.416 Rigby / .338 Lapua build
      #77328 - 24/04/07 08:10 PM

Hello all, by my post count you all can see that I'm new to the boards. I've seen that there is A LOT of great information posted here that I hope to be able to glean from everybody who's willing to share. I've recently found hunting again (and shooting in general) after several years in the U.S. Military.

Currently I'm stationed in Germany and putting plans together for a big bore take down rifle for that "once in a lifetime" trip to the dark continent. From some basic searching on the internet and articles found in available magazines I've come to a decent conclusion that a .416 Rigby/.338 Lapua Mag would fit caliber needs in a single action for any/all game that I might come across on a guided adventure through Africa. My question is what Mauser style action can handle a round as large as the .416 Rigby? I've seen these rifles built, however with very little specific information. I have a hard time believing that a military 98 would reasonably deal with such a large case without major modification, but an aftermarket/commercial could. So what would be best suited to the task?

Thanks ahead!

Wart,

Welcome to NE.com. You will like the people and discussions here.

You will need a magnum length action for your dream gun. The custom gunmakers can guide you to the right action. A vintage magnum Mauser, a Dakota, or one of the newer actions now available. You are talking about some $$$!

Good luck,
Curl

Hi Warthog Fixer, and welcome to NE.

There are several options, some more expensive at first glance than others.

Some of the high end makers of new Magnum length Mauser actions and/or rifles:

http://www.ritterbusch-rifles.com/?lang=en
http://www.granitemountainarms.com/
http://www.johannsen-jagd.de/grosswildbuechsen.html
http://www.satterleearms.com/index.htm
http://www.rbbigbores.com/
http://golmatic.de/Waffen_DE/jagdwaffen_de/jagdwaffen_de.htm

Other options in a 416 Rigby (although not exactly Mausers, and not take-downs) would be CZ or Ruger. These would not cost as much as the ones linked above, but might need a good gunsmith to go over them to make them 100% functional.

As for the calibers you mention, only the 416 would legally be usable on all African game. The super flat trajectory of the 338 Lapua isn't really needed in most of Africa, and is not large enough to be legal for "Dangerous Game" such as buffalo or elephant. Not to mention that if you needed to replace lost ammo (say one of your bags gets sent to Iceland instead of Zimbabwe), there is no way in hell you'd find 338 Lapua anywhere in Africa (maybe in RSA if you're lucky?), while you could get a hold of some 416 Rigby in most typical hunting countries.

Erik

Welcome!

Here is a Dakota African take down in 416 Rigby and 338 Lapua http://www.gunsinternational.com/detail....ds.ad_id%20DESC

That is $12k. And pretty typical for a well made magnum take down.

I know of another Dakota African Traveler take down, two barrels in 416 Rigby and 338 Lapua, that is not yet on the market. Comes with two Swaro scopes (1.5 x 6 for the 416 and 4 x 16 for the 338 Lapua) that were mounted and zeroed at the Dakota Factory. Much better wood, and the 416 barrel has a flip up ivory sight. The set also has a custom fitted Dan Walter case. Can probably be has for the same as the one listed on Guns International.

PM me if you are interested.

I agree,I wouldn't consider such a setup versatile for many African situations.

If I were to consider such a takedown setup for Africa I would think that a scoped 416 Rigby and something LARGER like an open sighted 450 Dakota or ?500 A Square or other Rigby based cartridge would be a great combo.

The scoped 416 would be great at reasonable distances and the 500 for close range affairs. The 416 could be used for most everything and the 500 for Ele.Sounds like fun to me!!

Whether this is even possible using the big straight cased rigby and the belted case 500 A Square I will defer to those much more knowledgible than myself.

That is EXACTLY what I'd like to end up with! Unfortunately it may take a while with a Technical Sergeants paycheck... and my wife thought High Power Rifle competitive shooting was expensive.

I'd read somewhere that that you should shoot as much gun as you can handle and than something in the .416 realm was a good do all for dangerous game. Maybe a bit light for Elephant, of course the PH would be there for back up too. It was suggested in the same article to bring something a bit lighter in the .33 caliber range for lighter game if you'd already gotten the through the dangerous stuff. Seeing as the .338 Lapua is based on the Rigby case it just made sence to do a take-down rifle in these calibers. That and I've got a "thing" for take-downs. It seems that several of the gunmakers you'd listed in your post (thanks VERY MUCH for those links BTW) seem to be thinking along the same lines as I.
