What Are Your Hunting Plans For '04?
      #7697 - 29/01/04 09:11 AM

I was wondering what everyone's got planned for this year?

I should be out hunting now, for birds and small game, but have been working too much.

I'm starting off in May with 3 weeks of bear hunting. 10 days in SE Alaska for brown bear followed by 10 days of black bear hunting, also in SE AK.

Summer will be slow, mostly spent fishing..but in the fall I have started plans for moose, caribou and blacktail deer. I always make sure there's a deer hunting trip for early fall.

Does everyone plan their year out ahead of time, or just wing it as seasons open?

dave

Right now the only plan I have that is set is the sheep hunt, and I still haven't nailed down the exact timing for that. I was waiting to see if I got drawn for one of the really top areas, unfortunately no. Thinking of heading to teh north Chugach's around the 1st of September.

Hoping to get in a deer hunt on Hinchinbrook, Montague, or Knight Island in the PWS around Thanksgiving or so. Maybe a long weekend moose hunt in the valley, or a long weekend goat hunt south of Girdwood.

I didn't draw anything either...still thinking about goat/sheep, though not really sure.

The blacktail deer hunts are my favorite. I've hunted them in PWS, Kodiak, POW, and other locations in Southeast. Good eating!

Haven't been on a goat or sheep hunt yet, so might have to switch gears this year and try for them.

Well, anybody with a first name of Dave just has to be a sheep hunter!!! Seriously, though, it is my favorite type of hunting, there is nothing in this world that matches it. The areas you hunt, the scenery, the work, the variety of animals seen, the feeling of spending a couple of weeks in the high country during the fall, and Dall sheep meat is the best table fare I've ever ate!!!

It's getting tougher to find good areas that isn't already pretty popular. They do exist, but its not like it was years ago b4 ANILCA stopped hunting where they created the National Parks. The creation of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, the Gates of the Arctic, and the Denali block additions, really took a huge bite out of the best sheep hunting areas. I'm not saying that we shouldn't have the NP's, but it sure did take a bunch of prime sheep/moose/grizzly hunting country.

First thing is to bring home the bacon. Feral hog hunting in the spring and maybe summer. Then some whitetail and squirrel hunting in the fall. Nothing out of the ordinary, no great trips or going great distances.

DPhillips,
I agree with you about the land issues. I started seriously looking into a sheep hunt for the first time this year...I was stunned when I saw how much was set aside and off limits for sheep hunting. Frustrating, to say the least.

Crazyquik,
Hogs sound like fun. I'd love to try 'em sometime. I've hunted whitetails a few times, only got a spike so far

Unless a miracle happens, africa is off until next year... however, we are going to try Antelpe in Wyoming as well as a pair (or trio) of deer hunts in Nebraska.

will kill a few turkeys, a slew of ringnecks and quial, and the odd, unfortunate rabbit and squirrel.

The season is ending right now, but I still have a month to try a Chamois and a Mouflon (already booked).
In May starts the Roe Deer Season and I got 2 tags just one hour away from home.
In Summer (August & Sept.), I'll spend the time hunting doves & Rabbits and I'll travel to Selous in October for an elephant and a Lion.
I want to go to Poland for some Roe deer, but I don't know if I'll have time.

That's all for this season .

I've got a whole bunch of stuff I'd like to hunt this year but need to wait and see what I draw. If lucky I will draw antelope in Wyoming and moose in New Brunswick. Will do lots of deer hunting at home. Maybe to Texas for blackbuck in March.

A lot up in the air yet.

Well, I didn't luck out on any of the sheep drawing units this year. Guess its back to pouring over maps to figure where ol' curly horns is hiding.

We still having the drawings for moose, bison, musk ox, etc... Never been lucky enough to get drawn for those either. That's okay, there's other units to moose hunt in. Though, I'd really like to get drawn for a bison or musk ox hunt.

It ranges from about 0.8% to 2.7%, depending on the unit you apply for. Slim chances, but I pay to play the drawing lottery every year.

For North America I would love to hunt bear of some sort - brown but even a blackie would be nice. Probably moose as well if I ventured to Canada or Alaska.

I like Brown bear and Moose as a combination.

Of course there is so many other animals.

Not in 2004 unfortunately but yesterday I started to come up with a hare-brained scheme to sell some wine at the safari shows in Texas. Who knows, perhaps in 2005 (or 2006 ).

In Oz I want to hunt water buff and Territory pigs in 2004. Plus a deer or two. More pigs. Maybe some goats. And a chance at Sambar which I did not get to in 2003.

A Brown Bear Hunt would be awesome!!! But unfortunately not one that is in my plans for 2004.

I will be hunting whitetails in Pensylvania, Ohio, and Maryland this year. I will also get out for PA black bears.

September will find me in the Colorado high country at my 10,500' base camp I will be taking care of my archery elk hunting addiction again I can't wait for September!

I may be doing a winter Caribou hunt. If not in 04 then definitely in 05.

Africa is in the wings............but soon
