First bear mauling in Alaska for 2007
      #76856 - 18/04/07 03:31 PM

Seems a hunter shot a grizzly on the edge of its den, waited to make sure it was dead, then went to get the bear. He was trying to roll it over when another bear either came out of the same den or from nearby, and jumped the hunter. The hunter got off one shot, but the bear began to maul him. The hunter's partner was close by (about 40 yards away) and shot the bear with his rifle - a 220 Swift and killed it. The bear fell on the first hunter.

The mauled hunter was medivaced out and should make a good recovery.

Makes one wonder what the F the partner was doing with a 220 Swift out in that country while the pro was bear hunting..

Call me crazy but just don't think I would be out and about in Brown bear country with a 22 caliber rifle.

The PH was very fortunate indeed.

My departed friend Crawford Hollidge, who lived on Cape Cod in Massachusetts, used to tell this story on himself.

It seems that he had tried for years, unsuccessfully, to kill a bear. Finally, he decided to hire an Indian guide, travel with him up a river in a canoe to wild territory in Maine, unaccessable by road, to camp and remain there until he got a bear.

He hired the guide, went up the river with him, selected a likely camp site, left the guide to pitch camp, and went for a stroll with his dachshund, armed only with a .22 Hornet, in case he encountered a grouse for dinner.

As he was walking along, he happened to look up and spotted a large black bear a short distance away, standing on his hind legs and leaning against a tree "for all the world like a man waiting for a bus."

Crawford looked at the bear, looked at his .22 Hornet, shot the bear between the eyes and went back to camp and told the Indian to pack up.

I understand that for many years the most popular Inuit weapon for use in hunting polar bears was a .22 Hornet. This certainly does not mean that I would attempt such a thing. But then, I wouldn't try to kill a lion with a spear or an elephant with a bow and arrow, either.

His partner was hunting wolves. The bear hunter was using a 338 of some type.

Now this the perfect situation where a heavy loaded 44 and up on his hip would've been nice and handy. If faced with the same situation, I'd have felt better with getting off a couple of shots at contact range. Good thing for hunting partners.
