calling up a fallow buck
      #76677 - 16/04/07 09:10 PM

Hi guys, the Fallow rut didnt really kick in were I was hunting, however I tried grunting through a sawn off cow horn, and was able to call in to 20 meters this Fallow stag. No monster by any standards, however it was right on dark when I realised he had sneaked up to me, and although I could see his antlers and some palms it was too dark to tell of his trophy potential. I didnt have any time to really make a decision so my insticts took over and I shouldered my rifle. He took off at the shot and I thought I may have missed, as I could hear him running into some thicker scrub. I looked around for him for a hour or so with a mini mag lite without any luck.
I came back the next day and found him in a thick patch of scub (behind the deer in the photo) as he had run about 80 - 90 meters. I had shot him a little far back and by the next day the foxes had a feast on his back half, so I only salvaged the antlers. Nevertheless it was very exiting having a stag come in so close whilst calling them in.

Cheers, Tony.

Gryphon, Yes this guy had definatly had a scrap with another deer before we meet up, yet he was keen for another round, considering how close he had come in. Rifle is Sako Finnlight 300 win mag useing 180gn Sako Hammerhead factory loads. (it realy is my sambar set up)

Mate you sure are getting amongst the Sambar, should be a good year in store for you! Also, saw your photo of a sambar hind in the ADA mag this morning!!Great stuff!!

Tony

Well done.

I have tried many times imitating my 'tame' fallow stags and while it seems to have some effect I still don't think I have it correct. Even tried tape recordings just to see what it does.

It is of course an artificial situation as the breeding stag knows there are others just over a mound and a parallel internal fence so he has no need to race over for a fight.

An 70 metre earth mound between the "stag pen" certainly has helped my fence stay in better shape however!
