Actually Peter it would have been great if you could have sat a beer can or bottle in the crook of Sako's paw on the chair, and pushed a TV close enough to make it look like he was "chilling" watching TV.

John, the way that pooch is hanging out in that chair, I would wager that he ordered himself a beer right after the photo and that Peter got it for him ....that shot kills me.

Peter/John:

I received the "Green Book" from the good folks at The Versatile Hunting Dog Association in the mail today.

We pick up our puppy this weekend, need to drive 4 hrs each way to get to the breeder, I hope this lil guy likes to go for a ride.... I figure the trip home will be a minimum of 5 hrs with water and wizz stops for the new addition to the family.

Saturday can't get here fast enough for my eldest daughter, she is extra excited about going to pick up her dog!

She now has a short list (about 12) of names but wants to see what the pups personality is before giving him his name.

I will keep you posted, I should mention that in briefly scanning the Green Book I can say that it looks like it is written in a very "common sense" manner and I think it will be a great tool in getting us going in all aspects of training both the handler and dog for home and field.

Thanks again for the lead on this book John!

Peter:
We made it home OK and in far less time than I anticipated.
This little guy has good set of lungs and seems to have a clock built in him that says 3 AM is time to hit the yard and relieve himself which looks like that will be my duty.
Its very similar to having a new born in the house again and as much as my wife says she isnt keen on dogs, this little guy has won her over.

I have a couple of pics and if I could send them to you via email Peter, would you mind posting them for me?

If you wouldnt mind, please PM me with you email address and I will send them to you.

I will start a new thread called "here's Bosco" based on the colour of his head and ears.(yes he is named after the chocolate syrup we used to drink as kids)

Thanks in advance Peter!

Peter,

your dog looks so much like mine, except Sieg had green eyes, whiter socks on the two front legs and less white on the chest and little on the belly. He probably was a bit heavier in the chest though weighing close to 70 lbs - 31 kgs. Perhaps he was older? The face is almost identical.

Like the photo of Sako in the snow.

I'm guessing GSP's get fairly cold in snowy conditions like that or do they toughen up?

GSP's toughen up, not mine that is for sure, when it is really cold sako has a limit for an hour more or less if he aint got a cover of some kind, not a problem if he is moving but if he has to stand still or sit by my side he will start to shake.

what about you john any puppy plans for you soon ?

Does anyone have experience with the GWP? I would imagine there is no real difference between them and GSP's, but just checking. I want one, though they seem a bit hard to find around here.

Hi gathumper

sorry for the late reply, i havent been looking here for awhile.
if your still wondering i will tel you about the diff. in the breeds in denmark anyway.

birdwork:

GWP: German wirehair pointer. one of the major allround pointers in northern europe, it works closer to the handler in the fields than most pointers, some think that is a down side but it makes it easy to get on the point also good, if the birds dont stand for the dog, easy learners and mostly natural pointers.

GSP:German shorthair pointer. most of them is extreme pointers, covering a lot of ground in a high pace, crossing up in the wind in a light run or a easy trot with there heads held high, scanning the air for the lightest whiff of bird.
to reach there full potential as a pointer, they need a lot of ground to cover looking for that elusive gamebird. if from good stock they will hunt your ass off even from early age.

waterwork:

GWP: most love it and will retrive at a heartbeat

GSP: got to work on it alot from early age, some never learn. they freeze easy !!!!!

Blood trail / furwork:

GWP: about half the swisshounds( semipro dogs and handlers in denmark that are just a phonecall away when you make that lousy shot, just for the gas money) are GWPs, if that is tradition or natural i dont know, but they are really good and again easy learners.

GSP: can truly exell at this(sako has done 48h x 1000m) but others never learn, its a matter of the right training and luck.

to sum it up:

GWP is a good allround dog, that is easy to train to a good level of work, but you have to work hard if you want them to exel in the birdfield.

GSP bird hunting machines most of them, but all other work can be a bit of a chance game(i love the shit out of them though)

If you get a pup from abroad be weary of GWPs from the northen part of germany some of the old stock there is really great hunters but not worth shit in the house as a family member and training tools is mostly a 3 foot 4x4.

that was my five cents hope this helps.

what ever you choose have fun with it.

peter

I would love to have at least one of each.

However I don't know how well a GWP would take burrs and prckles in his coat. I not big into grooming dogs.

john

the GWP takes burrs and prikles very well . stick with the shorthairs in that department. pretty easy just with a hose down.

a few new pics of my best dog

out by my pond behind the house, looks like the water in his head finally broke

this is how tall he is(barrels 28")

THIS is why he is my best dog, you cant get a point tighter than this.

and after a perfect rush and stay, i did my part(pure luck)

the prey were snipe which is a pint size woodcock, terrific game bird very difficult flight patteren but a great joy when you connect.

best

peter

Any thoughts or experience of Hungarian Wirehaired Vizlas? As I understand it, a Vizla cross GWP possibly with some pointer/bloodhound somewhere in the past...
