Good looking pooch!

I am going to pick up our new pup on April 28th.
My daughter and I will be going to get our 8 week old GSP as of yet un-named as that will be her job.

This pup will be a family pet first and a working dog only if he shows great natural apptitude. He will have plenty of room to run and if he locks up now and again on scent then I will spend some more time with him and see how he reracts to the report of a 12 guage.

Have a blast at the Sotheby's auction tommorow!

When you get him home and you are in the yard playing with him, try this:

make a blood trail 3-4 feet long with a treat at the end. start with the blood drops 2in apart and as the pup gets the idea make the distance longer both in lenght and apart.

if it got its instincts in the normal range, he will do a 3-400 meter at the age of 7 months

go to the local bucther he will have animal blood, put 5 tabel spoons of normal salt in, then it wont thicken when you put in the frigede. remember a littel goes a long way.

also makes it a happy and tired puppy without having to use your hunting knife as a chewtoy(yes sako did that at the tender age of 2 years hmmmm)

Peter: Thanks for the tip!
I take it that this practice drill is specifically for deer and moose hunting... would this drill confuse him if I were to use him for bird hunting?

I will also remeber to put my hunting knives up good and high on the shelf.

Thanks Again!

hi DT
the GSP is very versatile so you dont need to worry about him getting to single minded. i use phasent vings in the start as well.

you soak them in water and drag them over the lawn leaving a treat in the end of the trail, just make sure not to let him play with the wings, because it may give you a problem later if he consider it a toy and wont deliver it directly to you.

the most importent training is the stuff you do before the pup gets to be 6 months.

p.s the auktion was so-so

Thanks again for the advice, I think I will invest in a good dog training book and see if I can make this family pet to be a good field dog as well.... hell the way its going, he will be the only family member joining me in the field.... I have been in the bush a great deal of late scouting for turkey and putting corn out to feed both the turkey and the deer and not once has one of my 4 children come with me to just knock around in the bush and just enjoy the walk to busy on the computer all the time... I will guarantee that this pooch will never turn down the chance to get out run.

I was kind of hoping that the auction would yield some photos of a new toy or two that you bought... nothing much to look at or prices too high or both?

Peter

What sort of training do you do with your dog(s) in the first six months?

Is it just basic obedience type training or do you get into the hunting training that early?

Sako is a lovely dog too.

The "Green book" from the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association is very good.

Peter,
Good looking shorthair, very houndy face. I have found the shorthairs to be extremely biddable ( I have six )and one of the most affectionate breeds I have owned.

Hi john

im am so fortunate that i can have the dogs with me all the time. so i play it into them from the time i get them.
the most importent for me is search, fetch, and deliver. those are the commands that they will encounter the most with me on a working day.
so make up your mind before you start the training/playing what will be the most importent for you.

im getting a new dog in late summer july or aug. because i had to take my good old girl dina(golden retriver) to the vet for the last trip.

im trying a new breed this time, its gonna be a alasken malamute so im very thrillede about the new playmate.

hunting training from day one as a game like there mother would have if they were in the nature.
i have been doing this the last 20 years and it is really easy when you do it right.

I just ordered the Green Book from NAVHDA and they will mail it from the States tommorow.... If Canada Post is on the ball, I should see it by the time the pup is 5 months old.

Peter:
couldnt open the photos, your attempts at posting them are more valiant than mine,,, I do have to take the time to learn how to do that real soon.

GSPs like to think they are people. They really like to sit on human chairs and no matter how you try to train them not to, they will if they can. My GSP used to sleep in the house and the only way not to find him on a nice leather chair or lounge the next morning was to put boxes on them.

Great photo of your pal! It looks very familiar.
