POW Island DIY Bear and Deer hunt.
      #5742 - 16/12/03 12:21 PM

Anyone ever do a 'do it yourself' hunt on Prince of Wales Island for black bear and deer? If so, any info would be most appreciated. I'm looking at doing this next Oct (04)in hopes of catching the deer at early rut and the bears before they bed down for the winter. May have to just settle on one or the other, you guys can advise.

I'll either depart from Ketchikan to POW or ferry from Prince Rupert to POW. I'm looking for info on camping, boat rental, vehicle rental, permission from the Native land folks, using a cottage/hotel arrangement, fly in to remote camp, etc. - whatever info and advice you can lend.

I do have expedition quality stuff to use but will assuredly consider all scenarios. Thanks guys and gals.

Hey Mudbug, not POW but I am planning to hit Kodiak for sitka in 2004. I was supposed to do it this November but ran into some illness that cut my vacation time down significantly earlier in the year.

I will be staying at a lodge on the ocean there on Kodiak and will go for deer in the highlands. Simce I will be in the area I am going to look at doing black bere on the mainland or POW too. Though I hear POW is not that great for bears anymore, been over harvested.

Craig is a town of about 1300 people on POW, probably good bet for lodging. There's plenty of roads to access huntable lands. You might do a search for Craig Alaska or Prince of Wales Island for lodging options, etc...

The Regional Native Corporation for that area is Sealaska Corporation. They may or may not be the surface estate owner on the lands there, those may belong to a village corporation like Kluwack, but Sealaska would be the best place to contact for land ownership maps of private lands in the vicinity you wish to hunt.

The BLM, Alaska Dept of Fish & Game, and the Tongass National Forest will have land status maps and possibly info on good places to hunt. At least some statistics.
