I am considering whether to mount a Aimpoint red dot 2x scope with unlimited eye relief on my Win 70 458 WM.This may have been discussed previously but I don't recall anyone who actually had such a set up. I presently shoot peep sights ok but my eyes aren't getting any younger--
The minimal magnification appeals to me- Wonder if the scope can take the punishment of a big bore.It weighs 10.6 oz.I would like to put such a set up on a 500 A Square bolt in the future if I could ever get round to getting one built.

Maybe this set up would change my luck on trusting no scopes on rifles bigger than a 416 Rigby.
Any opinions pro or con??
Thanks for any/all responses--

Who knows?
If the Red dot does ok on the 458 WM Big Bolt then my 500 NE has claw mounts--Bonanza had suggested a lighter load for a scoped Double previously but if I could shoot the regulated load scoped--More/Better!
Irregardless, all this is pie in the sky stuff, but if purchased, the scope will be checked on a Big Bore before playing with a Double.

I have an Aimpoint red dot on a Kreighoff double in 9.3X74, no trouble so far and everyone that's tried it loves it!

I like the 2X Leuy Duplex hair on my .458. : The 2X red dot might be a fun alternative, if the scope can take the jolt. : What is the MOA designation of the dot? The red dot scope I have is 6 moa but only 1X - the dot is too big for anything but big animals at close range. I tested it on a .22 and groups were poor compared to even open irons, so it sits in a drawer.

I have an Aimpoint 2X on my 458 Lott which I used in Tanzania in 2005. I have it mounted on Leupold quick release rings and bases. No problems.
I liked the scope so much, just purchased another one for my Ruger M77 in 458 Win Mag.
The Aimpoint is waterproof and dustproof.
I talked to the factory about the rifle I was going to put it on, and they said no problem because they have used the scopes on large handguns with worse recoil.

That's what I wanted to hear!!
Hopefully it would hang together on the 458 WM and survive a 500 A Square loading(when I could have such a gun built). With my old eyes I use open sights but prefer a scope if possible. At 2x it sounds like fun on a heavy recoiling rifle with the possibility of at least 5" of eye relief.
Maybe it would even work with claw mounts on a Double!!

The eye relief is unlimited. You can put your head anywhere and shoot it. I take too long with my eyesight to use iron sights effectively. That is why I put the Aimpoint on. Put the dot on the target and squeeze the trigger. The dot does not even need to be centered in the scope to hit deadon.

Hi Hoppdoc,
If this is of any interest, I have a Lynx RDC Red Dot on my Brno 460WBY MAg( it used to be 458) I shoot a lot with it and it works perfectly. I am satisfied with my groupings on 100m and that is more than enough distance for me. The Brno is a very light rifle so it kicks like a giraffe and still the RDC holds.
Hope it can give you some guidance!!

Unlimited eye relief and 2X might just be the 'ticket' for my 6.5x55 'scout' rifle.

I think a red dot sight on a hard kicker is a good idea. I have spoken with the Zeiss people, and they say their Z Point would take the recoil of a 500 double and up.
I have one on a 308 I am testing. I have used Aim Points and EO-Tec's on 223's, but see no reason why they would not work on a hard kicker as they meet tough Military tests.
I have a couple of early EO-Tec's that I am going to test on a 375 H&H and a Blaser D 99 Duo 9,3x74R-12ga drilling.
I also thing the Doctor Optik would be an excellent choice. I shot one on an AR 223 and loked it.
They are very light and compact. The 4 minute dot is the correct one for a rifle.
